Ogbomoso Traditional Institution Backs Ibadan Traditional Stakeholders Against Alaafin as Permanent Chairman, Oyo Council Obas

The traditional institution and stakeholders in Ibadanland, together with Traditional institution in Ogbomosoland has speak with one voice against ongoing attempt by Oyo State House of Assembly to make the Alaafin of Oyo the permanent chairman, Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

The stakeholders said the decision of Ibadan people, through the Mogajis, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Baales, monarchs, Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative (ICPI) and others, together with Mogajis from Ogbomoso against decision of Oyo State House of Assembly remained sacrosanct.

The Mogajis of the Soun Ruling Houses of Ogbomoso have also kicked strongly against the planned Amendment Bill to the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs (2025) before the Oyo State House of Assembly that proposes to make the Alaafin of Oyo the permanent chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

They described the move is described as an affront and not in consonance with history.

Recall that Mogaji’s in Ibadanland, Central Council of Ibadan Indegiens (CCII), Ibadan Compounds Peace Initiatives (ICPI), Baales, Monarchs and prominent sons and daughters of Ibadanland has against attempt by the Oyo State House of Assembly to make the Alaafin of Oyo, the permanent Chairman, Oyo State Council of Traditional rulers and Chiefs.

The Ibadan stakeholders warned the State Assembly not to create problem, saying the position of Chairmanship of Council of Chiefs and Obas in Oyo State has always and should be on rotational basis.

A statement by President of Ibadan Mogajis, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori and the Coordinator, Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative (ICPI), Mogaji Nurudeen Akinade stated that their decision, together with the Ogbomoso people to reject the permanent chairmanship of Alaafin and sort for rotational chairmanship is not a fluke but groundded on historical perspective.

According to them, their decision is not personal but for the benefits of the entire state.

“Mogajis from Ogbomoso in their large numbers together with Ibadan Mogajis were this morning at the Oyo State House of Assembly.

“The respect we have for the immediate past Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi was as a result of his personal relationship with traditional institution and some of the distinguished personalities in Ibadanland.

“We respected and honored Oba Adeyemi’s age, as well as his brain, haven’t spent over 50 years on the throne before his demise, yet, he never disrespect Ibadan people, so, this current Alaafin should thread softly.

“The Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Debo Ogundoyin last Saturday at the grand finale of 2025 Ibadan week received award of “Most Outstanding Friend of Ibadan”, and all member of the House were also present at the event including the Deputy Speaker, this speaks volume.”
