The Yeye Afolashade Shona Aluko, YASA Foundation has held a skill acquisition training for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable residents in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital, as part of efforts to promote economic inclusion, self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods among underserved members of society.
The training and social inclusion, which brought together some persons with disabilities such as those who are visually impaired, hearing impaired, physically challenged, Albinos among others, provided participants with practical skills designed to enable them to become economically productive and reduce their dependence on others.
The beneficiaries were exposed to practical training and guidance aimed at helping them develop entrepreneurial abilities, improve their confidence and explore opportunities for establishing or expanding small-scale businesses.
Some of the products produced by the beneficiaries included, Adire, tye and dye fabrics, liquid soap, perfumes, cosmetics, slippers, artistic designs and many others.
Speaking at the programme held at the TREM Church Premises, Onikolobo, Abeokuta, the Founder and President of the YASA Foundation, Yeye Afolashade Shona Aluko, who was visibly emotional seeing the talents being displayed by the persons with disabilities, said the initiative was driven by the conviction that disability or social vulnerability should not constitute a barrier to opportunity, dignity and meaningful participation in society.
The Founder, who doubles as the Yeye Bobajiro Oodua, explained that beyond providing immediate support, her intervention was focused on equipping beneficiaries with relevant skills that could translate into income-generating opportunities and long-term economic independence.
According to her, she is committed to creating an inclusive society where persons with disabilities, vulnerable children, women, older persons and other underserved groups can access opportunities to improve their quality of life.
The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the YASA Foundation and its Founder, Yeye Afolashade Shona Aluko for the initiative, describing her as a Mother who is committed to impacting lives of others and raising the hope of underserved citizens across the Country.
While welcoming Yeye Shona-Aluko, the host, Princess Kehinde Adelaja Okoroafor described her as a woman of substance, worthy of emulation in the society, commending her for all what she is doing towards giving the vulnerable groups of people sense of belonging despite their status.
The YASA Foundation remains committed to advancing inclusion, dignity and opportunity for all through interventions in areas including skills development, inclusive education, healthcare, rehabilitation, livelihood support and protection of vulnerable groups.
The Abeokuta programme was part of its continued efforts to ensure that vulnerable Nigerians are not merely recipients of assistance but are empowered to become active contributors to their families, communities and the wider economy.
