The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Friday, ordered banks in Oyo State to load their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) with new notes Amid accusations against financial institutions over inavailability of newly redesigned notes
The CBN Controller of Ibadan branch, Mrs. Folake Ogundero, gave the order in Ibadan, the state capital, during sensitisation and awareness campaign to New Gbagi Market.
She contended that the CBN had made available adequate newly redesigned naira notes to all banks, not only in Oyo, but throughout the federation.
Speaking on the sideline of the advocacy visit to New Gbagi Market with Saturday Tribune, Ogundero said “we have heard complaints from the people about some banks still loading their ATMs with old naira notes. The authorities of the CBN have provided enough newly redesigned naira notes to all banks.”
According to her, “the message we have come here to spread is that January 31 deadline for old naira notes for N200, N500 and N1,000 notes is still sacrosanct. Traders, market women and men, including generality of Nigerians should ensure the deposit of their old notes in the banks.
“Paradventure they make sales on the January 31, they must ensure that they deposit the money in banks before the close of the working hours because old notes would cease to be legal tender from February 1, 2023.
“Nigerians should go to the ATMs and withdraw new notes. We are using this medium to also appeal to all banks within New Gbagi Market to load their ATMs with newly redesigned naira notes. There has been complaints here that the ATMs are dispensing old notes.
“We have also told the traders here about the cashless please and need for them to embrace it for their transactions.”
