Global Emerging Pathogens Treatment Consortium (GET) has recently published a textbook focused on One Health and also distributed freely to students and teachers of Loyola College, Ibadan.
The textbook is an output of GET’s ongoing project tagged GET One Health School Project (GHSP) focused on introducing the concept of One Health to students of various secondary schools across Nigeria.
GHSP is a project approved by the Oyo State Ministry of Education which is currently running in four schools in Oyo State that includes; Oluyole Community School, Qiblah High School, Loyola High School, and St. Catherine College.
On the 21st February 2023, the GHSP team organized an event to launch and distribute the One Health textbook among students and teachers at the Loyola College, Ibadan.
At the event, 30 students and 10 teachers of Loyola College were officially inaugurated as the GET One Health Ambassadors and Mentors respectively.
The Ambassadors are representatives of class S.S I to S.S III, and they will be serving as One Health leaders in their respective classes, while the GHSP Mentors will mentor the Ambassadors in the school.
At the event, the Project Coordinator, Ms. Ifeoluwa Alabi addressed the students and teachers on the importance of One Health and how it concerns the young people who are most vulnerable in our communities.
Alabi encouraged the students to practice the act of leadership from their classes adding that they are the leaders of tomorrow.
She noted that the GET One Health Textbook handed to the Ambassadors must be read and treasured as it represents their staff of office.
Also at the event, the principal of the school, Mr. Akinlayo Akinade, who was represented by one of the Vice Principals of the school, Mr. Olufemi Moradeyo, commended GET and the GHSP team for choosing Loyola College for the project and for the free distribution of the textbook among their students.
The GET One Health Textbook covers various topics such as One Health, Climate Change, Food Security, Antimicrobial Resistance, Biosecurity and many more; and GET is planning to distribute many copies of the textbook for free across several secondary schools in Nigeria.
