…Accreditation covers four digital skills areas as academy targets industry-ready workforce.
Ibadan Digital Academy (IDA), an applied digital skills training and capacity development institute based in Ibadan, Oyo State, has secured approval from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to operate as a Skill Training Centre (STC) under Nigeria’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) framework.
The approval, conveyed in an official letter dated November 2, 2026, authorises the academy to provide competency-based training in four occupational areas: Social Media Communications, Creative Media (Digital Media Production), Computer Networking and Web Application Development.
The development marks a significant milestone in the academy’s commitment to strengthening practical digital skills development and providing Nigerians with access to structured vocational training and recognised professional certification pathways.
The approval followed an application by the academy and a verification visit conducted by NBTE between August 16 and 17, 2026. The four approved occupational areas cover key aspects of the digital economy, including digital communication, creative media production, network infrastructure and web application development.
Under the approved arrangement, the Computer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria) (CPN) will serve as the Sectoral Awarding Body, responsible for assessing trainees and recommending successful candidates for certification, while the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) will issue certificates based on CPN’s recommendations.
The approval is linked to Nigeria’s National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF), which provides a structured system for developing, assessing and recognising occupational competencies, with emphasis on practical skills and the ability of trainees to demonstrate competence in their chosen fields.
Speaking on the achievement, the Chief Executive Officer of Ibadan Digital Academy, Engr. Peter Olutayo Ojo, described the approval as an important step towards strengthening the academy’s vocational training programmes and aligning them with recognised occupational standards and industry requirements.
He said the recognition would provide an opportunity to deepen practical, competency-based skills development in the approved areas, while appreciating the relevant authorities for the recognition.
According to him, the academy remains committed to fulfilling the responsibilities associated with operating as an approved Skill Training Centre and ensuring that its training programmes meet established standards.
Explaining the rationale behind the application, Ojo said the decision was informed by the need to improve the quality, structure and recognition of practical digital skills training in Nigeria.
He noted that digital education should go beyond the acquisition of theoretical knowledge to include demonstrable occupational competencies that meet recognised standards and respond to the changing demands of the economy.
He added that the NBTE approval would provide a structured pathway for skills assessment and certification, while contributing to the development of a skilled workforce capable of competing in the evolving digital economy.
Ojo further explained that the approval distinguishes the academy by formally linking its training activities in the four approved occupational areas to Nigeria’s national TVET and skills qualification framework.
He disclosed that the academy also plans to expand the range of programmes covered by the Skill Training Centre arrangement, subject to applicable approval and recognition requirements.
The academy announced that training under the newly approved arrangement is scheduled to commence in February 2027.
Interested Nigerians seeking admission are expected to receive information on enrolment procedures, admission requirements, programme schedules and other relevant details through the academy’s official communication channels.
Established in 2018, Ibadan Digital Academy provides digital skills training, practical learning and mentorship, with broader training offerings covering software development, data analytics, artificial intelligence, DevOps and cloud computing, among other technology-related fields.
The NBTE approval is expected to further strengthen the academy’s role in developing practical digital competencies and preparing Nigerians for emerging employment, entrepreneurship and career opportunities in the technology-driven economy.
