In a bold move to safeguard Nigeria’s digital landscape, Ibadan Digital Academy (IDA) has hosted a landmark webinar on cybersecurity awareness and career opportunities.

The virtual event, held on October 26, 2024, brought together international and local experts to empower Nigerians against rising cyber threats.

As Nigeria and the world become increasingly interconnected, cybersecurity has emerged as a critical concern. Sogo Faloye, IDA’s Chief Operating Officer, emphasized the urgent need for awareness, stating, “Cybersecurity impacts everyone. Awareness is the first step towards a safer digital environment.”

Prof. Olumide Longe, Vice Chancellor of West Midlands Open University and IDA’s Advisory Board Chairman, highlighted cybersecurity’s broader social and economic implications.

“Cybersecurity goes beyond preventing attacks; it’s a field with vast potential to make a positive impact,” he explained. “Our young people can become creators and guardians in the digital world.”

Engr. Oluranti Adeniyi, a cybersecurity expert from Capgemini Australia, introduced the fundamentals of cybersecurity, including the CIA triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability).

Dr. John Efiong, a certified ethical hacker and IDA’s lead cybersecurity mentor, discussed the growing wave of cyber threats in Nigeria and Africa.

The experts offered practical advice on protecting personal data and organizational information.

“Awareness and vigilance are our best defenses against cybercriminals,” Dr. Efiong stressed.

They also highlighted the economic potential of cybersecurity, with Dr. Efiong noting, “The demand for cybersecurity professionals is expanding quickly. It’s an exciting time to build a career in protecting digital spaces.”

Ibadan Digital Academy’s webinar served as a call to action, urging Nigerians to adopt basic security measures and stay updated on emerging threats.

Prof. Longe emphasized, “Cybersecurity is here to stay. As more of our lives move online, our defenses must grow stronger.”

Through its comprehensive digital skills training programs, IDA is nurturing a new generation of tech-savvy professionals ready to innovate and protect Nigeria’s digital future.
