The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), Oyo State Chapter, has inaugurated Abass Adebayo Fasilat, MIQS, as its 15th Chairperson, with a renewed commitment to unity, capacity building and increased visibility for the profession.

The investiture and inauguration of the 2026–2028 Executive Committee held on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Ibadan.

Abass, who succeeded QS Oluwade Kayode Kolawole, FNIQS, the 14th Chairman, pledged to build on the achievements of past administrations while promoting professional development and strengthening the chapter’s position in the construction industry.

In her acceptance speech, the new Chairperson expressed gratitude to Almighty God for the opportunity to serve, describing her emergence as an honour and a call to responsibility.

She acknowledged the contributions of past chairpersons and the outgoing executive, and called on members to work together towards achieving the chapter’s objectives. She also urged members to remain actively involved and hold the leadership accountable, stressing that sustainable progress can only be achieved through collective commitment.

Representing the NIQS President, QS Dr. Aminu Muhammad Bashir, FNIQS, the Deputy President of the institute, QS Bamidele Mafimidiwo, FNIQS, charged the new leadership to uphold integrity, dedication to service and capacity building.

Mafimidiwo said the chapter must mentor young quantity surveyors and improve public understanding of the profession to ensure that individuals, businesses and government benefit from its expertise.

He called for greater involvement of quantity surveyors in infrastructure development, particularly public road projects, noting that their expertise in measurement and cost management could help government achieve better value for money and promote accountability in public spending.

He further disclosed that the institute has an enforcement committee responsible for monitoring projects and checking quackery, adding that the institute will continue to protect professional standards.

In his valedictory speech, the outgoing Chairman, QS Kolawole, highlighted the achievements of the 2024–2026 Executive, which focused on professional development, public awareness, members’ welfare, collaboration and mentoring of future professionals.

He disclosed that his administration held 31 executive meetings, organised two technical workshops, conducted career counselling visits to nine secondary schools, participated in a programme involving about 20 schools, and made 18 media appearances across six radio stations in Yoruba and English.

Other achievements included strengthening relationships with allied professional bodies, supporting members during major personal and professional milestones, and instituting an award for the best graduating quantity surveying student across the four tertiary institutions offering the course in Oyo State.

Kolawole, however, identified the proposed chapter secretariat building as a major project yet to be realised, urging members to sustain their support for the institute’s development.

He maintained that the strength of the institute depends on unity and continuity.
