The Publisher of Newspeak Online and Chairman of the South-West Group of Online Publishers (SWEGOP), Pastor Bisi Oladele, has called for stronger collaboration among media professionals and effective regulation of the online news space to uphold ethics and national development.
Oladele made the call on Thursday in Ibadan while presenting a paper titled “Online News Publishing and National Development” at the launch of Daily Open News held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, Iyaganku.
He noted that while online journalism has revolutionized information dissemination, it has also created challenges that demand responsible publishing and fair regulation, not repression.
“The digital era has changed everything — from education to healthcare and journalism. But as we enjoy these benefits, we must also insist on professionalism, truth, and accountability in online reporting,” he said.
The veteran journalist stressed that self-regulation and collaboration among practitioners are essential to building credibility and sustaining public trust in digital journalism.
Oladele, who also chairs SWEGOP, urged online publishers to avoid sensationalism and prioritize accuracy, ethics, and partnership with traditional media and regulators to enhance the quality of information reaching the public.
He commended Daily Open News for its bold step in joining the digital media landscape, expressing optimism that it would promote responsible journalism and national growth.
The event attracted top media executives, NUJ leaders, and representatives of government and civil society.
