OYSG, Private Firm Organise Training for SMEs Operators

In a bid to strengthen financial literacy and management capability of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, the Oyo State government has organized a training with the theme: Financial Planning & Management Strategies: Cash Management, Financial analysis & Debt Management for the beneficiaries of intervention grants for SMEs operators in the State.

The training which was put together by Oyo-NG Cares Result Area 3 in collaboration with a consultancy firm, ACME Professionals, has so far been held in five geo-political zones in the State.

The zones are Ibadan zone 1 & 2 held on the 2nd and 3rd December, 2024 at Ibadan Civic Centre, Idi-Ape, Ibadan; Oyo zone on 5th & 6th December at MLM Cooperative building, beside Joba Pharmacy, Owode Oyo; Ogbomoso zone between 9-10 December at Ragaray Hotel, off Ogbomoso-Ilorin road, Isale General, Ogbomoso and Oke-Ogun zone 1 & 2 held today December 12 at Queen Events Centre, along Oja-Agbe road, beside Federal Road Safety office, Iseyin respectively.

The programme was designed to equip the beneficiaries of the intervention grant with the essential financial skills and knowledge, enabling them to tackle business challenges, foster growth, ensure sustainability and optimise the use of grant resources.

While addressing the participants, the Director-General, Oyo State Investment & Public/Private Partnership Agency (OYSIPPA), Mr Olatilewa Folami stated that the training is a testament to the Oyo State government’s continued commitment to support the economic growth and development in the state, adding that the government has made business growing its topmost priority.

His words: The government has given the SMEs operators this grant but it is not enough to give them grants without giving them training that will help them in managing their businesses both in good times and in bad times.”

In his remark, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ACME Professionals that organised the programme, Mr Wahab Olalere expressed appreciation to the Oyo State government under the leadership of Engr. Seyi Makinde for its decision to give the SMEs operators the opportunity to learn how to manage their finances more effectively through the training.

He stressed further that the training will no doubt allow the participants to contribute more effectively to the economic development of the State by the time they inject the knowledge acquired into their businesses.

Also speaking, the Training Coordinator, Alhaji Ajibola Hamzat stressed that the training was organized because of the importance the government attached to SMEs to drive the economy in the state.

In a lecture titled: Overview of Small & Medium Scale Enterprises in Nigeria; Prospects & Opportunities delivered by Dr. Morakinyo Kunle Oloyede, he stressed that the SMEs play an important role in Nigeria’s economic growth, as they constitute 97.2℅ of the companies in Nigeria.

He added that they also contribute to national development by positively influencing the distribution of income in both functional and nominal terms.

Dr. Morakinyo, who identified insufficient capital, inexperience, lack of focus and succession plan as well as lack of proper book keeping as some of the factors responsible for premature death of SMEs, however, concluded that despite the challenges the future of SMEs is promising, with the immense potential for growth and innovation.

Lectures were also delivered by various businesses and financial experts, followed by questions and answers sessions while certificate of participation was issued to each of the participants at the end of the training.

Some of the participants, Rafiu Akeem, Olatunji Abiodun George, Adeoti Inoussa and Awosanya Oluwabusola Victoria, in their separate reactions, said the seminar has given them an insight to what will enhance their business growth and how to tackle challenges they might encounter in the day to day running of their business activities.

They praised the Oyo state government and the private firm that organised the training, ACME Professionals, for putting together such an educational training, which they described as an eye opener.

Meanwhile the last batch of the training programme for Ibarapa zone will take place on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th December at New Eruwa City Hall, Eruwa.

Oyo State Labour Veterans Association Holds Annual General Meeting Lecture and Merit Awards

The Oyo State Labour Veterans Association recently held its annual general meeting, featuring a thought-provoking lecture titled “Relevance and Integrity in Labour Politics in Nigeria” delivered by Professor Kehinde Kester of the University of Ibadan.

The event celebrated the association’s commitment to promoting workers’ rights and advocating for their interests.

Comrade Chief Wheed Olojede, Planning Committee Chairman for the 2024 General Annual Meeting, played a key role in organizing the event. However, Comrade Ibrahim Bolomope, a former NLC leader, presided over the meeting, emphasizing the importance of relevance and integrity in labor politics ¹.

Professor Kester’s lecture underscored the need for labor leaders to prioritize integrity, transparency, and accountability. He stressed that relevance and integrity are crucial in navigating Nigeria’s complex labor landscape. The audience engaged in lively discussions, exploring practical applications of the lecture’s themes.

The association recognized outstanding individuals with merit awards. Pa Com Vet Oladimeji Akinade received the award for “A Reliable and Dedicated Veterans Labour Leader of the Year” ². Other awardees included Dr. Sola Akande, Executive Secretary of Oisha in Oyo State, for his exceptional service, and Professor Kehinde Kester, for his scholarly contributions to labor relations.

Comrade Ibrahim Bolomope’s leadership and Comrade Olojede’s organizational efforts showcased the association’s dedication to promoting labor interests. Representatives from other labor groups and dignitaries attended the event, underscoring the association’s influence and reputation within the labor community.

Looking to the future, the meeting encouraged continued collaboration and urged individuals to remain vigilant in promoting labor interests. The event concluded with a prayer for a prosperous new year and a renewed commitment to community development.

‘Odidiomo’ Nominated for Prestigious Award of Excellence

Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology and Cyber security has been nominated for the prestigious 2024 NUJ Award of Excellence by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council.

 

The nomination letter, signed by the NUJ Oyo State Chairman, Ademola Babalola, and the Planning Committee Chairman, Seye Ojo, extolled Hon. Olajide’s commitment to community development and philanthropy, which have significantly impacted lives across Oyo State and beyond.

 

According to NUJ, Hon. Olajide’s contributions include initiating and funding numerous projects aimed at improving education, healthcare and social infrastructure.

 

He has supported schools, health clinics and community centers, demonstrating an unwavering dedication to enhancing the quality of life for his constituents in Ibadan North-West and South-West Federal Constituency.

Traditional rulers, including the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege III, and the Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Sefiu Adeyeri III are also expected to grace the event as royal fathers of the day.

House of Reps Speaker, Abbas Calls for Proactive Measures to Curb Escalating Cyber Security Threats

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has called for urgent and proactive measures to address the escalating cyber security threats in Africa.

The Speaker made the call at the 4th Live Hacking Cybersecurity Conference held in Abuja on Monday.

Represented by the Chairman, House Committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology and Cybersecurity, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide, the conference, themed “141 Servers Down: A Call for Proactive Defense Strategy,” provided a platform for cybersecurity experts, policymakers and stakeholders to deliberate on safeguarding Africa’s digital infrastructure.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Speaker, Hon. Olajide, stressed the importance of the theme, noting its timeliness and relevance in the face of growing cyber attacks..

He said, “The incident of ‘141 Servers Down’ is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in our digital systems and the devastating impact cyber attacks can have on critical infrastructure, financial systems and public services.”

The Speaker expressed concern over the rising tide of cyber threats on the continent, citing losses exceeding $4 billion in 2023 due to cybercrime, with Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya being the most targeted nations.

“These figures are not just statistics; they represent disrupted businesses, compromised data, eroded trust and threats to national security,” he stated.

He emphasized that the House of Representatives remains committed to creating a legislative environment that supports a secure digital economy and protects the nation’s critical infrastructure.

While proposing a comprehensive framework to mitigate the challenges posed by cyber threats, Hon. Olajide reiterated the Speaker’s commitment to advancing legislation that supports digital transformation while safeguarding against cyber risks.

“Our legislative agenda prioritizes the security of our digital ecosystem. We are committed to supporting bills, enhancing funding for cybersecurity projects and ensuring transparency and accountability in their implementation,” he affirmed.

The Speaker, through Hon. Olajide, urged all participants to embrace a culture of proactive defense to protect Africa’s digital future and commended the organizers for their dedication to fostering dialogue and innovation in cybersecurity, while encouraging stakeholders to act decisively on the insights gained during the conference.

Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South) has been celebrated for his exemplary dedication to public service and societal transformation, receiving four prestigious awards within a single week.

The Osun State Polytechnic Alumni Association (OSPAA) has re-elected Alhaji Yakub Adebayo as its President for a second two-year term.

Adebayo emerged victorious in the biennial convention’s online and physical voting process, securing 202 votes against his contender, Mr. Olurin Bernard, who garnered 10 votes.

 

Adebayo’s leadership style, emphasizing integrity, accountability, and fulfillment of promises, has resonated with the alumni community. His first term saw significant milestones, including globalization of the association and easy certificate collection. These achievements have positively impacted the association, fostering unity and growth.

How Osun Lawmaker, Lekan Adeoti Boosted Nigeria’s Economy Through Youth Empowerment

The diversification of Nigeria’s economy from its heavy reliance on crude oil has been a recurring recommendation from economic experts over the past decades.

This push has prompted successive national administrations to invest significantly in the agricultural sector, which was a key driver of Nigeria’s economic growth before the discovery of oil in 1956 in Oloibiri, present-day Bayelsa State.

The current administration, led by His Excellency President Bola Tinubu, has also prioritised substantial investment in agriculture to ensure food security for Nigerians.

However, the Federal Government alone cannot achieve the desired success in this critical sector without the collaborative efforts of other political leaders across all levels and the citizens.

One such political leader is Lekan Adeoti, a young man from Ifetedo community in Ife-South Local Government Area of Osun State.

Lekan Adeoti is the lawmaker representing Ife-South State Constituency in the current 10th Assembly of Osun State. While he has been proactive in his constitutional duties of lawmaking and oversight, his remarkable contributions to youth empowerment through agricultural and vocational training deserve special attention.

Popularly and politically called “Lekan”, he has sponsored 93 youths from his constituency to attend the Soilless Agricultural Laboratory in Ogun State for intensive training in modern agriculture and vocational skills.

These youths are trained in batches, starting from March 2024, with each batch undergoing a three-month programme. The initiative equips participants to become employers of labour rather than mere job seekers.

The training rekindles interest among young people in agriculture by introducing them to modern practices such as mechanised farming. Participants learn to construct greenhouses—enclosed structures worth approximately ₦11 million—used for cultivating fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other plants requiring controlled environmental conditions.

This hands-on agricultural training provides participants with practical knowledge as they monitor their crops throughout the training period.

The benefits are multifaceted. During the three-month training, participants receive stipends, and they also earn a percentage of the profits generated from their cultivated crops.

In addition to agricultural training, participants gain vocational skills of their choice, including tailoring, welding, carpentry, and more. This invaluable knowledge equips them to be self-reliant in a competitive labour market, ultimately contributing to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), of which agriculture accounted for 24% in the past decade.

The training at the Soilless Agricultural Laboratory is ongoing, with Lekan Adeoti ensuring that at least 30 new young farmers graduate every three months. His efforts significantly contribute to national food security and bolster Nigeria’s economy.

If more financially privileged Nigerians were to sponsor youth agricultural initiatives like Lekan Adeoti, food insecurity would become a thing of the past. Hunger would be eradicated, and youth unemployment rates would see a substantial decline.

Ibadan Northeast Constituency II Lawmaker, Sola Owolabi Employs Ad-hoc Staff for Ilupeju Health Centre

The lawmaker representing Ibadan North-East State Constituency II, Honourable Sola Owolabi has approved the employment of Mrs. Olubukola Babasola as an ad hoc staff at the Lagelu-Ilupeju Community Health Centre at Oke’badan Area.

Honourable Owolabi made this announcement during his visit to assess the ongoing renovation at the Community Health Centre.

He said the decision to engage an ad-hoc staff is to strengthen the capacity of the personnel at the centre,for improved service delivery.

He added that the current renovation of the Health Centre by Ibadan North-East Local Government Authority requires concerted efforts of all stakeholders to reposition the Health Centre, hence his decision to engage Mrs. Babasola.

One of the leaders of Ilupeju Community, Elder Dele Aderibigbe lauded the gesture of Honourable Owolabi.

He noted that the lawmaker has always been playing a pivotal role to boost the capacity of the Health Centre.

Honourable Owolabi later paid the sum of #50,000 for the procurement of planks,to replace the wooden window-frames of the Centre,while also pledging his commitment to collaborate with all stakeholders involved in the quest to reposition the Lagelu- Ilupeju Community Health Centre for the benefit of the masses.

‘Odidiomo’ Completes Another School Project, ICT Hub In Ibadan N/W-S/W Federal Constituency

In fulfilment of his commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy to his constituents, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide, member representing Ibadan North West/Ibadan South West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has again demonstrated purposeful representation by completing landmark educational projects across his federal constituency.

 

The projects include, a six-classroom block at Urban Day secondary school, Adeoyo, Ring Road, Ibadan and a three-classroom block at Special Basic School, within the premises of Adeoyo state hospital, Ring road Ibadan, are among the latest constituency projects facilitated by the two term PDP lawmaker.

 

The projects facilitated through the Oyo State Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA) and office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDG’s aim to address overcrowding and ensure conducive learning environments for students.

 

Similarly, in fulfilment of his promises during the electioneering campaign, Hon. Olajide has also facilitated the establishment of an ICT hub at Oba Abass Aleshinloye Grammar School, Eleyele, Ibadan.

 

Fully equipped with modern technology, the facility is designed to empower students with essential digital skills, preparing them for global opportunities in a tech-driven world.

 

Speaking during a pre-commissioning inspection of the projects, Hon. Olajide, represented by his Senior Legislative Assistant, Mr. Kunle Folarin, described the initiatives as part of his broader strategy to uplift the educational standard in his constituency.

 

“These projects are investments in our future,” said Mr. Folarin.

 

“Hon. Olajide is focused on providing opportunities for students to excel in an environment conducive to learning and skill acquisition and this is just the beginning of more impactful developments to come.”

 

Meanwhile, residents of the benefitting communities who were part of the inspection tour, have expressed gratitude to the lawmaker, lauding the projects as timely intervention.

 

Mrs. Funmi Alade and Mr. Tunde Adebayo, both parents residing in the areas lauded the initiative of the lawmaker for providing suitable and conducive learning environment for the schools children.

 

“Our children now have a safe and spacious place to learn. This is a dream come true,” she remarked.

 

They said the ICT hub is a game-changer, which is not just about digital literacy; but also about creating opportunities.

Sheikh Bello’s death a great loss to humanity – Oyo South Senator, Alli

Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South) has expressed deep sadness over the passing of the renowned Islamic preacher, Sheikh Muhyideen Ajani Bello.

This is contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Akeem Abas, and made available to newsmen on Friday in Ibadan.

The renowned and fearless Islamic preacher died on Friday in his Ibadan home at the age of 84 years.

Senator Alli described the late cleric as a towering figure whose teachings as well as lifestyle profoundly impacted countless lives in Nigeria and beyond.

The lawmaker lauded Sheikh Bello for his unwavering commitment to Islam and his dedication to preaching peace, unity, and the fear of Allah.

He said that the cleric’s sermons often inspired hope, strengthened faith, and promoted morality among Muslims as well aside non-Muslims alike.

“Sheikh Muhyideen Bello was a spiritual beacon whose words guided millions of souls.

“He was an embodiment of piety, wisdom
and humility, always reminding all of their duties to Allah and humanity.

“His passing is a great loss not only to the Islamic community but also to all who cherish justice, kindness, and righteousness,” Alli said.

Senator Alli extended heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family, his disciples and the entire Muslim Ummah, urging them to find solace in the impactful and exemplary life the cleric lived.

In a bid to align Nigeria’s legislative operations with global best practices, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology and Cybersecurity, has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to adopting advanced digital solutions to enhance governance and improve legislative efficiency for the benefit of Nigerians.

Hon. Olajide stated this while speaking on behalf of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, during a courtesy visit by a delegation from Huawei Technologies Co. to the National Assembly.

Addressing the delegation, Hon. Olajide acknowledged Huawei’s extensive global expertise in digital solutions and ICT innovations.

He highlighted the importance of digital transformation in strengthening the country’s legislative processes and fostering transparency, and also emphasized the need to explore avenues for the digitalization of House operations through the adoption of modern ICT infrastructure, while expressing confidence that the partnership would position the House of Representatives as a model for digital efficiency and accountability.”

“Our aim is to establish a robust digital ecosystem that will not only enhance legislative productivity but also improve citizen engagement through e-governance,” he stated.

While urging Huawei and other stakeholders to partner with the government in realizing the objectives of the e-governance bill, Olajide further disclosed that the process of reviewing existing ICT policies in the National Assembly are being put in place to ensure alignment with global best practices.

“The e-governance Bill is a crucial step in this direction, and we welcome Huawei’s technical input to ensure its success.”

Earlier, the Huawei Technologies delegation had pledged its support in driving Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda, noting that the company has successfully implemented similar projects across Africa and is keen on bringing it’s expertise to the Nigerian legislative process which is believed, will set a benchmark for other government institutions in the country.

Senator Alli begins cash empowerment for women in Oyo South

Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South) has commenced a cash grant initiative aimed at alleviating poverty and improving the economic status of women in his constituency, starting with hundreds of beneficiaries in Ibadan North Local Government.

 

The program, announced in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Akeem Abas, will be extended to other local governments in the Oyo South Senatorial District in the coming weeks.

 

Senator Alli described the initiative as part of his continuous efforts to support women, emphasizing their pivotal role in societal development.

 

“This is just the beginning of a continuous program aimed at empowering our women.

 

“We believe that when women are financially empowered, it trickles down to improve the entire family and the community.

 

“My goal is to ensure that no woman in Oyo South is left behind in this journey toward economic self-sufficiency,” he said.

 

The senator assured beneficiaries of more programs and opportunities in the months ahead while calling on political leaders and stakeholders to prioritize women empowerment.

 

“Our women deserve the best. They are resilient, hardworking, and pivotal to the growth of our communities. It is our duty as leaders to support them in every way possible,” he added.

 

He urged recipients to use the grants effectively to ensure the program’s sustainability and attract more interventions.

 

Some beneficiaries, who received varying amounts of cash, expressed gratitude to Senator Alli for his generosity and dedication.

 

“This support will go a long way in helping me expand my petty trading business. The senator has shown that he truly cares about the grassroots,” they said in separate remarks.

 

The empowerment program will be replicated across other parts of the district in the weeks ahead, reaffirming the senator’s commitment to impactful initiatives for the people of Oyo South.

Lead City University Awards Olubadan Honorary Doctorate Degree

The management of Lead City University, Ibadan, has bestowed on Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Akinloye Olakulehin (Ige Olakulehin 1) honorary doctorate degree in Public Administration.

 

The ceremony was part of the activities for the 17th convocation ceremonies of the institution.

 

The event took place at Adeline hall, Lead City University, Ibadan on Wednesday.

 

At the event, Olubadan was represented by Aremo Olubadan, Barrister Sumbo Owolabi Olakulehin.

 

In his acceptance speech, the Olubadan appreciated the university for the award.

 

He used the opportunity to congratulate the new graduands of the institution.

 

“I congratulate Lead City University. I will say that LCU is a pride of Ibadan. We in Ibadan are always proud of Lead City University as one of the first generation of private universities in Nigeria”.

 

The Chancellor of the university, Professor Gabriel Ogunmola while speaking, said that the award was in recognition of the immense contributions of the monarch to the society.

 

He added that the Olubadan has made significant contributions in the areas of public administration and management, business, philanthropy, educational development, healthcare and community services.

 

He maintained that the institution, in recognition of these laudable achievements decided to confer the Olubadan with the honorary doctorate degree in Public Administration.

 

Barrister Olakulehin was accompanied to the event by the Asaaju Olubadan, Chief Ademola Odunade, Gbonka Olubadan, Chief Olufemi Ogunwole, Oota Balogun, Chief Kayode Afolabi Kadelu, Aare Egbe Omo Balogun, Chief Adegboyega Adegoke Prince Adekunle Owolabi Olakulehin and Prince Isiaka Folaranmi.

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Cybersecurity, Hon. Adedeji Olajide, has emphasized the need for robust ICT infrastructure, digital literacy programmes and enhanced cybersecurity to drive Nigeria’s economic transformation and global competitiveness.

Hon. Olajide made this call during a courtesy visit by the Nigeria Institute of ICT Engineers to his National Assembly office in Abuja. The discussions focused on the National Digital Economy and e-Governance Bill and ways to strengthen Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

He stressed the importance of collaboration between government, industry experts and private sector stakeholders in creating sustainable solutions. “Our legislative and regulatory frameworks must address current and emerging challenges effectively,” Olajide stated.

The lawmaker also highlighted the critical role of ICT engineers in implementing innovative solutions that meet global standards and reaffirmed his commitment to promoting laws that integrate technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain and data encryption into governance while protecting citizens’ rights and privacy.

Earlier, the delegation, led by its chairman, Engr. Oluwadare Oluwalana, commended Hon. Olajide for his advocacy, capacity-building efforts and policy-driven initiatives that foster innovation, describing him as instrumental in advancing Nigeria’s digital agenda.

A certificate of appreciation and award was later presented to Hon. Olajide in recognition of his dedicated service, hard work and leadership, with commendation for his contributions to the ICT sector in Nigeria, Africa, and globally.
