‘Odidiomo’ Calls for Religious Tolerance

Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide has passionately appealed to Nigerians to wholeheartedly embrace religious tolerance, emphasizing its critical role in fostering harmony and understanding among the country’s diverse religious communities.

Hon. Olajide made the appeal during the 35th anniversary celebration of (AF-NI-MO-NA), an initiative of Muslims in Light Organization (MILOR) of the Caring and Sharing Sufi Centre Nigeria held at scout camp, challenge Ibadan.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Olajide emphasized the importance of fostering understanding and respect among different religious groups in Nigeria.

He said, “Religious tolerance is not just a necessity but a vital component for peace and progress in our diverse nation, and urged attendees to embrace the values of coexistence, compassion and dialogue, which are fundamental to the teachings of various faiths.”

Olajide lauded the founder of the Caring and Sharing Sufi Centre, Master RTB Akinbile, for his decades long commitment to promoting peace and unity among Muslims, while stating that his unwavering leadership has been instrumental in guiding the center towards becoming a place of hope and an example of what can be achieved through mutual respect and collaboration.”

He highlighted that by nurturing a spirit of coexistence and respect, Nigerians can pave way for a more peaceful and united society, which he said is essential for the nation’s progress and stability.

The event, which attracted a large turnout, also featured a book presentation which reflected on the journey of AF-NI-MO-NA over the past 35 years, highlighting the organization’s achievements in community service, education, and interfaith dialogue.

FIRS Boss Condoles Oyo NUJ Chair Over Mum’s Passing

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Zacch Adedeji Ph.D, has commiserated with immediate family members and relatives of the chairman of the Oyo chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Ademola Babalola, over the death of his mum.

Adedeji, in a statement by his Technical Assistant (Print Media), Sikiru Akinola, urged Dembab, as Babalola is fondly called, to be consoled by the fact that the woman lived an impactful life by raising stars like the journalists’ boss and his siblings.

“My dearest Comrade Ademola Babalola, I join others in commiserating with you over the loss of your dear mother. As sad at it is, I want you to be consoled that she lived to see you and others excel. Having a son like you and the mention of your names almost on daily basis especially in the state was an encouragement for the many years of toil to see you grow.

“Through you, we see the kind of mother she was and one of the ways to immortalize her is to constantly remember the values she imparted in you and pass them over to your offsprings.

“So on behalf of us all the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, I offer our condolence and pray the Almighty Allah to grant your matriarch Aljannah and continue to console all of you left behind.”

Oyo South Senator, Alli Urges National Commitment To End Crimes Against Journalists

Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South) has urged Nigerians to safeguard journalists from intimidation and violence, stressing the crucial role journalists play in sustaining democracy.

The appeal was contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Akeem Abas and made available to newsmen on Saturday in Ibadan.

In the statement to commemorate International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, he commended the bravery of Nigerian journalists who continue their work despite facing considerable threats.

The lawmaker called on the public to recognise and protect journalists as defenders of truth and accountability.

He lauded their resilience in the face of adversity, highlighting their commitment to serving society.

“Today serves as a reminder that democratic societies cannot flourish without the safety and freedom of the press.

“Journalists are essential in shedding light on stories that promote accountability, justice, and transparency,” he said.

Senator Alli underscored the ongoing dangers that journalists encounter, such as violence, harassment, and even murder.

He noted that these crimes frequently go unpunished, creating atmosphere of fear that stifles freedom of expression and threatens democracy.

“Those who intimidate or harm journalists must be held accountable,” he asserted.

The lawmaker assured Nigerians of his dedication to supporting laws and policies that protect journalists’ rights to work without fear.

“We must establish and strengthen judicial and law enforcement mechanisms that expedite the prosecution of individuals who commit crimes against journalists,” he said.

Senator Alli called for a collaborative effort among media organizations, civil society, and government agencies to protect press freedom.

He emphasised the need for a safe environment for journalists, along with supportive measures to mitigate their risks.

“On this International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, let us renew our collective commitment to ending impunity, protecting press freedom, and upholding justice.

“Let us honour the memory of journalists who have sacrificed their lives in pursuit of truth by strengthening our commitment to a free and safe press,” he added.

Senator Alli calls for strengthened healthcare laws, equitable access to quality services

Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South) has called for a stronger legal framework to drive critical improvements in healthcare delivery across Nigeria.

 

He made the call on Thursday in Ibadan during a lecture organised by the University College Hospital (UCH) Students Association.

 

His lecture was titled “The Intersection of Law and Health in Nigeria: Shaping Healthcare Policies, Regulating Medical Practices, and Ensuring Equitable Access to Quality Healthcare Services.’

 

The lawmaker emphasised the role of strengthened laws in building an equitable and effective healthcare system.

 

“Enforcing these laws effectively is crucial to maintain patient safety and public trust in the healthcare system,” he said.

 

Alli identified key areas where healthcare laws can bolster health system efficiency, especially in policy strengthening, medical practice regulation, and promoting equitable access to quality services.

 

He noted that while laws like the National Health Act (2014) exist, gaps remained in addressing modern challenges like mental health and non-communicable diseases, which require urgent attention.

 

To achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC), Alli urged for comprehensive legal reforms, particularly expanding the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to cover low-income earners and informal workers.

 

He stressed that increased government funding for the NHIS is crucial, as it would reduce out-of-pocket expenses and improve access to essential healthcare for all Nigerians.

 

“Healthcare regulatory bodies, including Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) as well as Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) must receive increased funding and personnel to enforce healthcare laws more effectively,” he said.

 

Alli also called for educational campaigns to empower patients, especially from marginalised communities, on their healthcare rights, enhancing accountability in healthcare delivery.

 

“When patients understand their rights, they are in a better position to demand quality care and accountability from healthcare providers,” he said.

 

The lawmaker urged collaboration among stakeholders, stressing that holistic reforms are essential for a resilient healthcare system that respects Nigerians’ rights and addresses diverse health challenges.

 

“Our legal frameworks must evolve to tackle current and future health challenges,” Alli stated.

 

He stressed the importance of these agencies in maintaining standards and ensuring ethical practices in medical professions.

‘Odidiomo’ lauds Makinde over state-of-the-art PDP office

Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and member representing Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West federal constituency of Oyo state at the House of Representatives, has commended Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde for putting in place a state-of-the-art office for the PDP in the Southwest, named after the immediate past chairman of the party in the zone, Chief Soji Adagunodo.

Hon. Olajide, speaking through his Special Adviser, Media and Public Affairs, Tolu Mustapha, praised Governor Makinde’s visionary leadership, which he said has transformed the political environment in Oyo State.

He said, “Governor Makinde’s uncommon foresight has institutionalized politics in a way that promotes unity and effectiveness among party members and described the magnificent party house, billed for commissioning tomorrow, Saturday, 2nd November, 2024, as a significant milestone in party politics across the south-west zone of the country, noting that it is the first time a political party will have a permanent edifice of this caliber at the zonal level in the Southwest.

Olajide, welcoming the national leadership of the PDP to Ibadan, the political headquarters of South west politics, expressed his gratitude to stakeholders across the party, for the love and cohesion that has propelled the party to this achievement and emphasized that the new office would enhance the party’s operational efficiency and strengthen its presence in the region.

Olubadan Sympatises With Victims, Families of Building Collapse

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, Ige Olakulehin 1 has sympatised with the victims and families of those who were involved in the building collapse incident in Ibadan on Thursday.

Oba Olakulehin made this disclosure in a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Comrade Solomon Olugbemiga Ayoade.

Reports indicated that a building collapse incident occured at Jegede area in Ona Ara local government area of the state on Thursday. About ten people reportedly lost their lives as while several others sustained various degrees of injuries.

Oba Olakulehin in his reaction, described the incident as worrisome and unfortunate.

He used the opportunity to sympatise with the families of those who lost their lives and other victims of the incident.

Oba Olakulehin while speaking further, urged the state government and other stakeholders to investigate the matter.

The monarch who said that he was disturbed by the incident, tasked relevant agencies such as National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide the necessary relief materials to the victims and their families.

He also tasked regulatory agencies and professionals involved in building, construction and planning to investigate the matter and put more efforts in place to prevent future occurrences.

The statement reads, “The Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, Ige Olakulehin 1 is using this medium to sympatise with the victims and families of those who were involved in the building collapse incident in Ibadan on Thursday.

“Based on the available reports, ten people have reportedly lost their lives in the incident. Several others were injured as a result of the unfortunate incident that occurred at Jegede area of Ibadan in Ona Ara local government area.

“This is an unfortunate incident that should be investigated properly. It is a sad occurrence that should be stooped in Ibadanland. The relevant agencies involved in building construction and town planning should carry out their responsibilities to prevent future occurrences.

“I am appealing to the experts in building construction and planning to ensure that relevant materials are used and all protocols are followed before, during and after construction of buildings in Ibadanland to prevent this kind of incident.

“I want the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other stakeholders to provide prompt relief materials to the victims and their families.

“I also want to appeal to the relevant professionals to provide necessary support to the victims who are still receiving treatments and their families.

“It is my prayer that Ibadanland, Oyo state and Nigeria will continue to protect the lives and property during my reign. Amen”.

FG Intervenes in Arraignment of Teenage Hunger Protesters, Issues Directive to Police

The Federal Government has stepped into the case of the #EndBadGovernance protesters who were arraigned earlier on Friday at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The protesters, arrested during the August 1-10 demonstration, were granted N10 million bail each with two sureties in like sum by Justice Obiora Egwuatu.

However, during their arraignment, four of the protesters, including two minors, slumped and were rushed to the hospital.

This led to criticism considering the look of the children who seemed to be underfed.

Reacting, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, announced the government’s intervention in a statement on Friday night.

Fagbemi directed the transfer of the case file from the police to his office, citing the need to examine certain issues before making an informed decision. He also instructed the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation to initiate the process of bringing the adjournment date forward.

It has just come to my notice that the police have arraigned those arrested in connection with the endbad governance violent protest in court for various offences including treason.

There are some issues my office will need to look into regarding the matter to enable me take an informed decision.

I am aware that the court has remanded the defendants in detention centres and adjourned the case to January.

It is not within my power to vary the order of the court remanding the defendants in detention centres and adjourning the case to January. I have, however, directed the Nigeria Police to transfer the casefile to my office and hand over same to the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) tomorrow, Saturday 2nd November, 2024.

I have further directed the DPPF to immediately put machinery in motion for consideration of the court to bring the adjournment date forward (an earlier date).

Nigeria: A country where corruption makes its rulers deaf, dumb and blind (2)

“Corruption is a cancer, a cancer that eats away at a citizen’s faith in democracy, diminishes the instinct for innovation and creativity”. – Joe Biden

All we have seen done in the fight against corruption has remained at the pedestrian level. There is little – if any – political will, to tame this monster or castrate. It’s left on the loose and on reckless rampage. Fighting corruption should go beyond rhetorics or lip service. It should serve as an instrument of change and recalibration of a society averse to corruption – the anti-progress enemy that has deprived the country of every good thing. It has retarded development and stifled progress. Rather than be used for a lofty purpose, it has been instrumentalized to silence, contain or control political opponents.
In our collective drive to stop the scourge which corruption has become in our land, the crusade needs to be stepped up to stop this virus from further spread, from eating off the parts that make up the ladder – that should provide the stairway – for our country to ascend to the peak of its destined greatness.

One of the fundamental elements to achieve this vision, is education. Education should be accorded priority and attract more funding from the government in light of UNICEF revelation that over 45 per cent of children between the ages of 6 and 11 out of school. Moreover, citizens need to be sufficiently educated to be able to sieve right from wrong and demand for what is right. They need to be empowered to contribute intelligently to the progress of their country through proper enlightenment.

The abstruse public service is undesirable as it encourages corruption. Transparency should be the keyword in all government businesses; from budgeting to award of contracts and even employment. This should be the watchword in all government businesses/transactions; starting from the conception of policy to budgeting; award of contracts and even employment. Lack of transparency is the first thing that sows the seed of corruption, absence of transparency, probity, justice and fair play are the greatest obstacles to the fight against corrupt practices in the public service. All government expenditures should be budgeted. Extra-budgetary spending should be criminalized and security votes should be completely phased out.

Absence of principles lay at the root of the integrity question in Nigeria, the back lash being the drift of the nation towards the precipice of all forms of corrupt practices. Public officers cannot fight corruption by seeking to occupy offices at all cost and by acquiescing to callous and corrupt demands of their god fathers and their superiors. Honesty has to be lifted to the position of a prized and rewarding national value. Criminals should not be celebrated as heroes on account of their wealth.

The fight against corrupt practices can come about successfully through the promptings of leaders and not rulers whose commitment are not tended to peoples’ trust but leaders that are ready to embrace and transmit honest habits, create equal opportunities for all citizens through open career to talents, reward honesty and integrity while sanctioning what is wrong.

Bringing on board few more stringent measures to the renewed WAR AGAINST CORRUPTION – all our financial institutions should collaborate and prune the procurement process to give room for transparent and accountable system of doing business. Though, it’s often said that criminals are always ahead as they devise means to circumvent laws, break barriers and test government’s resolve to combat crimes. But when severe deterrent (capital punishment) is served, we can heave a sigh of relief. Cash transactions should be completely abolished or minimized as much as possible. With electronic movements of cash, everything could be within watch and can be tracked.

Again, government must be resolute to eradicate corruption in our electoral process. If corruption thrives in the way leaders are brought to offices, we are indirectly bringing corrupt people to power and thus perpetuating corruption.

The media and civil society organizations should be mobilized and encouraged to be vigilant and honest watchdogs of all systems. Whistle-blowers must be encouraged and protected. Excessive bureaucracy and administrative gridlock in the syatem should be tackled. Reducing unnecessary process will cut down tendencies of corruption as people need not to bypass established rules to accomplish any task.

Removing the polity from the syndrome of bullion van/ghana-must-go bags even in the face of impeachment threats, appointment of investigation panel by Judges for the removal of Governors, loss of seats in the legislature for change of parties and so on, would be a plus for the fight against corrupt practices and enthroning integrity while exposing and prosecuting all corrupt officials would be a minus for lack of integrity?.

Instituting transparency in the country in our life time can only be achieved when we are ready to be our brother’s keeper by giving everyone his due, by treating every worker equally and by addressing the twin issues of greed and poverty. Benevolence and tolerance of each other should guide and colour our relationships, not greediness, animosity, hatred, and exploitative tendencies.

Government alone cannot fight corruption in the public service, it must be seen to be collective responsibility. We all know our corrupt practices and the prevailing social injustice in the society. We can right the wrongs if conscious efforts are geared towards (to completely spare a thought for) saving Nigeria, thinking and acting for the common good, restoring our cultural values and ethics of honesty. It is then our fight against corruption would yield the desired results and enthrone integrity in our system.

Leadership is core to getting things done. Leadership at all levels should be beyond reproach to provide the needed example. There should also be the will to apply sanctions. It has been canvassed severally that lack of will by the political leadership to prosecute the war against corruption takes us nowhere. The political leadership should be determined and it should be seen to be serious about it.

Lastly, at the root of achieving all these is a resolve by all Nigerians individually and collectively to not compromise. We must resolve to shun corruption entirely by taking a stand that ‘I will not take bribe again’ no matter the consequence. Time will come when there will be no takers!

‘Odidiomo’ Completes Construction of ICT Hub Project At Oba Abass Aleshinloye Secondary School, Eleyele

Chairman, House of Representatives committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology and Cybersecurity, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide has announced the completion of a newly constructed ICT Hub at Oba Abass Aleshinloye Secondary School, Eleyele, Ibadan.

The project, facilitated through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), according to Tolu Mustapha, Special Adviser, Media and Public Affairs to Hon. Olajide, is in alignment with the Oyo State Government’s vision to increase access to technology and improve educational outcomes across state, and also aimed at enhancing digital literacy and access to technology for students in the education sector of Ibadan North West/Ibadan South West Federal Constituency of the state.

The initiative, Mustapha further stated, is in fulfilment of Hon. Olajide’s campaign promise of commitment to improving educational infrastructure in his federal constituency and ensuring that students are well-prepared for the demands of the 21st century, as the ICT Hub, which is equipped with modern computers, high-speed internet access and various software tools, is tailored to support both academic and extracurricular activities.

“In today’s digital age, it is imperative that our students have access to the necessary tools and resources that will equip them for future challenges.

“This ICT Hub is not just a facility; it is a gateway to opportunities that will empower our youths and provide them with the skills needed to thrive in a technology-driven world.

“The Hub is expected to serve not only the students of Oba Abass Aleshinloye Secondary School, but also other schools in the area, thereby fostering a collaborative learning environment, while plans are underway to organize workshops and training sessions for both students and teachers, ensuring that they make the most of the resources available”, Mustapha stated.

Ex Oyo Lawmaker, Babatunde Esuola is Dead

A former lawmaker in the Oyo state House of Assembly, Hon Babatunde Esuola is dead.

Said to have died hours ago, news of his death began to filter in about 6pm this evening.

Sources close to the deceased lawmaker from the ancient town of Oyo revealed that it was quite unfortunate he died days to his PhD defence at the University of Ibadan where he has been a Doctoral student.

Pacesetter News recalled that the late Esuola was one of the Pro – Alao-Akala, lawmaker during the impeachment saga that led to the removal of Gov. Rasheed Ladoja from office in 2006.

He was appointed Chairman, Oyo state Community, Social and Development Agency, (OYCSDA), Board by Gov. Seyi Makinde during the first of his tenure in office.

Alli Advocates Inclusive Electoral Reforms, Reaffirms NASS Commitment To Electoral Progress

Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South), the Senate Committee Chairman on Electoral Matters, has called for inclusive electoral reforms to enhance Nigeria’s democratic process. 

 

This is contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Akeem Abas and made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Ibadan.

 

The statement said that Alli made the call in his opening address at the North-West Zonal Legislative Interactive Session on the electoral act held in Katsina.

 

The theme of the session was ‘Legislation and Participation of Women and Young Persons in Elections and Leadership.’

 

Senator Alli reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to refining Nigeria’s electoral framework, underscoring the importance of inclusivity to advance Nigeria’s political landscape.

 

The lawmaker stressed the need to foster greater participation of all groups in the country’s governance.

 

Alli commended Gov. Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina for hosting the event and acknowledged the robust participation of government officials, legislators, and community leaders.

We deserve projects that can withstand test of time – Group tells Makinde

A call has been received by the governor of Oyo state, Engineer Seyi Makinde to ensure good quality in the ongoing infrastructure projects across the state.

 

Good Legacy, a socio-political group, made this call in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Akinosun Bankole and secretary, Jide Gbolagade on Tuesday in Ibadan.

 

Giving the hurriedly completed Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba which was flooded on the day of commissioning as an example, the group tasked the Governor to ensure the ongoing reconstruction and repair of roads in Ibadan metropolis stands a test of time.

IBEDC, Bresson Sign N180Bn Magboro Power Plant Purchase Agreement

The first phase of Magboro Power Plant Kicked of Monday 28th October 2024 with official signing and unveiling of the 30 MW Power purchase agreement between Bresson A S, Magboro Power Company and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.

Customers around Magboro, Mowe are expected within 11 months to benefit from 24hours uninterrupted electricity supply as a result of the collaboration between Bresson and IBEDC at competitive rates.

The Magboro plant designed as a 90 MW plant is expected to receive its first shipment of Titan 170 Solar Turbine by the end of April 2025.

In his remarks, Engr. Francis Agoha, the Acting Managing Director of IBEDC, emphasized that this partnership aligns with the Federal Government’s target of 6000 Mega Watts power projection for 2024 and the company’s strategic goal of improving customer energy availability.

“This agreement marks a significant milestone in our continuous efforts to ensure consistent and affordable power for the Magboro community and beyond,” he stated.

“We are committed to forging partnerships that foster progress and deliver lasting solutions to the power challenges faced by communities within our network.”

Magboro Power Company Limited, a respected independent power developer, will play a crucial role in this initiative.
