In a bid to tackle the pressing challenges facing education in Nigeria, the Rotary Club of Ibadan, Orita-Mefa, has emphasised the urgent need for improved teacher quality, increased funding, and greater parental involvement as key solutions to revitalising educational system in Nigeria.
The President of the Orita-Mefa Rotary Club, Rotarian Oyebode Adegboyega Adesina, gave the solution yesterday, during the donation of customised chairs and tables to Rotakids of Omolewa Nursery and Primary School, Ibadan to commemorate the club’s 2024 Basic Education and Literacy Project.
According to him, the quality of teachers being recruited is crucial as many higher institutions lack the necessary materials for practical learning, which affects student engagement and morale.
He said when teachers are not well-supported, it will lead to a cycle of disillusionment, urging the government to significantly increase funding for education, advocating effective monitoring of how resources are allocated to ensure they are used to employ qualified teachers.
Furthermore, Adesina underscored the importance of active parental engagement in education, saying, “Many parents do not know what’s happening to their children in school. It’s vital for them to understand their kids’ challenges and support their learning.”
He also stressed the need for integrating morals and values into the curriculum, which is essential for shaping well-rounded individuals.
To put these solutions into action, the Orita-Mefa Rotary Club of Ibadan donated three dozen customized chairs and four tables to the Rotakids at Omolewa Nursery and Primary School, Ibadan.
“This donation is part of our efforts to improve the learning environment for young students at Omolewa,” Adesina remarked, highlighting the club’s commitment to enhancing educational resources.
“This donation will significantly enhance the learning experience for our children. Together, we can foster a brighter future for our children through education, and it starts with each one of us taking action,” he emphasised.
