Confusion in Oyo State as the State Government and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) presented conflicting figures on the total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus.
At 11.26 p.m on Saturday, the Chairman of Oyo State Taskforce on COVID-19, Governor Seyi Makinde announced five fresh confirmed cases through its official twitter handle. According to Engr. Seyi Makinde, the total number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the state stood at 282 on Saturday.
The tweet reads:
OYO STATE COVID-19 TASK FORCE UPDATE (MAY 30, 2020)
1. Twenty-one confirmed COVID-19 patients have received their second NEGATIVE test results and have been discharged in the past three days. This brings the number of discharged cases in Oyo State to ninety-six.
2. Also, the COVID-19 confirmation tests for the following number of cases came back POSITIVE:
May 28 – 10 cases, all from iSON Xperiences
May 29 – 15 cases, 10 from iSON Xperiences
May 30 – 5 cases, 2 from iSON Xperiences
So, the total number of confirmed cases in Oyo State is 282.

BUT later at about 11:55 p.m on Saturday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced five new cases and put the total number of confirmed cases in Oyo State at 280.

Reacting to the development, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Senator Teslim Folarin, Com. YSO Olaniyi expressed worry that a lack of synergy between the state task force on COVID-19 and the NCDC in the release of figures could lead to the breach of public trust. He therefore urged both Oyo State Government and the NCDC to clear the lingering confusion.
