In his effort to build, develop and support a new generation of leaders with socio-political culture to catalyse positive change in Nigeria, a member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Shina Abiola Peller in collaboration with Lead Generation Initiate on Friday trained over 80 youth on leadership.

The programme which was held at Jogor Center, Ibadan saw entrepreneurs, politicians, farmers, among others, participate in a one-day training.

The programme is a non-political and non-profit organisation committed to creating opportunities for young people to channel their creativity, energy and aspirations in adding value to their communities.

The lead sponsor of the training, Peller said he wants to develop an interest of the youth in governance, social inclusion and participation in the democratic and political process in Nigeria.

According to him, “The motive behind this project was to call the young people in Nigeria to take responsibility for building their immediate communities. Most of the young people in Nigeria are tired of the present situation and that is why we see most of our young people focusing on ‘Big brother Naija’ and all these entertainment programmes.

“I believe it is high time we set up a sustainable structure which we can be able to ride on in order to achieve a country of our aim and we can do that by building our immediate community, so that is what we are doing here.

“We are aware that the voice of every young Nigerian needs to be heard – our programmes are community targeted to galvanise, train, support, and raise the voices and stake of the Nigerians youth. We are building a new generation of young people that take responsibility for fixing their communities and country through active participation in the socio-political process.

“I believe it is high time for us to re-write the story of our country and that start from building our immediate environment and the leaders in Nigeria are the ones that will make policies that will affect businesses and our personal lives and that why we want to give an opportunity to young people to channel their creativity and aspiration into nation-building.”

One of the participants, Adisa Idris lauded Honourable Peller for the gesture saying it is a memorable day planning for the generation to come.

Also, Ufitfly boss, Evangelist Ajibola Ogunkeyede who also part of the programme said this is high time the younger generation take every opportunity to be part of the governance of the country.

Lawmaker representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency of Oyo State, Shina Pellar, has decried what he described as the archaic political ideologies being promoted by the leadership in Nigeria as well as the recycling of leaders noting that the practice is hindering the nation’s development.

Pellar spoke on Friday at the Get involved leadership training workshop with the focus on ‘Engaging for a new Nigeria,’ held at the Jogor Events and Conference Centre, Ibadan, Oyo State.

The two-day workshop engaged a total of 160 participants in two batches of 80 youths per day. The lawmaker said the forum was used to re-orientate the youths on the concept of being a focused leader.

Pella, who described the nation’s structure as a failed political structure, said, “I believe it is high time for us to rewrite the story of our country and that starts from building our immediate environment. The leaders in Nigeria are the ones making policies that affects our daily lives and businesses. Why can’t we be in the decision making group? I think we should give opportunity to young people to channel their creativity and aspirations into nation building.

“Looking at the present political structure in Nigeria; it is a failed structure that is not working. We have a total of 8,809 wards in the country and I can tell you that 95 percent of the people calling the short at the ward level are not informed, so it makes our foundation to be warped. While other countries have a foundation.

“The motive is to call the attention of Nigerian youth to take responsibility of building their immediate communities. I am sure if many of us are doing this at the same time, we would be building the nation. Most of the young people in Nigeria, I am sure, are tired of the situation and that is why we see most of our young people focusing on Big Brother and other entertainment programmes.

“I believe it is high time for us to set a sustainable structure which we can be able to ride on in order to achieve a country of our dream. We have got to a stage in Nigeria where we should set the age bracket of people who would occupy positions of political responsibility. Putting sustainable source of income as a criteria for considering people for political positions should be key.

“This a non governmental, a non profit oriented organisation and participants at this workshop are selected from across the Oyo State with the aim of spreading all parts of the country.”

Oyo State Government has expressed its readiness to reintroduce Boys’ Scout Club to public primary schools across the State, for character moulding and sound learning of pupils.

Dr Nureni Adeniran, the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), said this in Ibadan during an advocacy visit by the State Commissioner of Boys’ Scout.

According to a statement by the Board’s Media Team, Adeniran disclosed that subject to approval by the State’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Boys’ Scout will give pupils the opportunity to get first-hand insights on preparedness towards life.

He said it would complement the State Government’s efforts in moulding and modelling pupils, adding that this would attest to Governor Seyi Makinde’s absolute commitment to improve the basic education sector.

The SUBEB boss said the reintroduced club would be an improved adaptation of the moribund one, noting that the club would make pupils more responsible towards their academics and extra-curricular activities.

“We don’t mind reintroducing the Boys’ Scout club into our public schools’ system, because we realise that this will complement Governor Seyi Makinde’s quality education policy”.

He said the doors of the state government was open to suggestions and ideas, from clubs such as Boys’ Scout that would further build capacity of the education system in Oyo state.

According to him, the present government is doing so much to improve pupils’ reading culture and build their moral life by providing.

“The state government is also presently seeking more ways of improving the character and morale of our pupils. So, reintroducing Boys’ Scout is a very brilliant idea,” he said.

In his words, the State Commissioner, Boys’ Scout, Mr. Adetunji Adepeju, affirmed that the club has been approved by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

He said the Mission of Scouting is to contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.

Therefore, he called on SUBEB to encourage at least 4 (four) staff in each school to present themselves for training as Scout leaders who shall monitor, maintain and sustain the packs and troops in the respective schools.

He noted that the club established by Baden-Powell teaches members to be prepared, adding that the club would teach pupils how to be prepared for learning and for the future.

Members of the proscribed Oyo State National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), have called on the Oyo State Police Command to intervene in the recovery of the union’s properties forcefully taken away by the Chairman, Disciplinary Committee of the Oyo State-constituted Park Management System (PMS), Mr Mukaila Lamidi a.k.a Auxiliary.

According to a statement signed by their spokesperson, Mr Kayode Agbeyangi, a copy of which was made available to journalists in Ibadan, on Thursday, the NURTW members noted that though Lamidi, shortly after his armed-robber like behaviour was made public, had started returning some of the items he took away from various NURTW offices, but yet to return a reasonable number of them.

The statement read in parts:”After we made public the nefarious act of Lamidi two days ago, he has started returning some of the union’s properties in his possession. But we are still pleading with the Nigerian Police, Oyo State Command, to please help in the recovery of the remaining items.

The Oyo NURTW members further said that:”It is also of great importance to inform the police about the use of siren by Lamidi, of which he uses to perpetrate his dastardly acts as he is always fond of using the siren to drive against traffic whenever there is gridlock, thereby creating panic among motorists and other road users.

“Even the governor of the state would for no reason drive against traffic, we do not know where Lamidi got his license to do whatever he likes on the road from. Let us also state that the police should beam its searchlight as we have insider information that some of the vehicles in his entourage are always loaded with dangerous weapons to scare people unduly.”

“Yesterday, he returned 6 out the 14 units of airconditioning systems which he took from the New Garage office of the union, remaining 8 in his possession. He also returned 4 out of the 24 ceiling fans he took from the same office. Aside that, he is still in possession of flat screen TVs he removed from the offices at New Garage and Egbeda offices, he only some chairs.

“We also want the police to take note of the fact that he is still in possession of furnitures and refridgerating systems of which he moved out of the Iwo-Road office of our union. We are appealing to the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State to please save us from the thievish claws of Lamidi, who is renowned for acts of hooliganisn and perpetual devilish character.”

The Zenith Labor Party (ZLP) in Oyo state on Thursday described the statement uttered by the State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde at the flag off of the phase two of light up Oyo State in Ogbomoso as unfortunate and least expected of a man of his standing. 

The ZLP in a statement by its Chairman, Comrade Wole Abisoye said the office demands comportment, saying a Governor who uses hate speech and foul language against imaginary opposition in the State is gradually digging his own downfall and such utterances should be regarded as height of recklessness.

Makinde had stated that even if he decides not to seek re-election in 2023,  the state will not fall into the hands of charlatans anymore.

“Let me sound this: if I will not seek re-election, I am sure that Oyo State will never, again, be in the hands of charlatans,” he had said among other things.

Abisoye said Makinde is as ingrate for having the effrontery to attack those who helped him to power. He asked him to withdraw such reckless statement if he wish to enjoy any form of respite from top gladiators in the State, anytime soon.

“The 2015 election which Makinde lost woefully readily comes to mind. One wonders how he could claim that a party that could not win even a councillorship boasted to unseat him in 2023 makes his case a bad one.

“He forgets so soon that in the said election, he did not win any ward as governorship candidate of SDP.  As a matter of fact, he lost in his own polling booth and only won in one or two polling booths in the state.

“It means he could not have won any election without the coalition partners, otherwise why did he fail in all the previous elections since 2007 that he has been presenting himself for elective offices?

“Its trite that power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely. For a person who renege a favour done to him by others, Yoruba has a name for such an individual. I won’t dignify him further, he knows the concept of Omoluabi and what’s to follow when a person’s word could no longer be his bond?,” Abisoye queried.

Speaking further, he counseled the governor to stop further attacks on political personalities in the state, saying, asking questions about seeming rudderless in approach to governance should not be seen as attacks because we are all stakeholders in this State.

The ZLP chairman said its members never regretted supporting the Peoples Democratic Party to win in 2019, but gets worried daily on the future of the state because of the ongoing borrowing spree and apparent mortgage of its tomorrow.

The statement reads:”Our concern is the increasing debt profile of the state. We are worried because Oyo State belongs to all of us and whatever goes wrong would affect us and our children in future.

“As we speak, our debt is increasing daily in less than a year and half of Makinde’s government. The latest light up project which he claimed would will gulp over N28billion calls for concern, especially when our teeming youths are jobless. We are yet to see effect of loans recently collected by this government.

“We are not playing politics with our statement, but we need to call attention of the well meaning citizens of the state to your poor undertsanding of governance and leadership, especially as regards to increasing debt profile.”

“This light up repayment spread over seven years; at what cost ? Who is the investor ready to wait for seven years repayment period after completing a job in nine months with a 120 days moratorium? Who is fooling who?,” Abisoye thundered.

A university don, Dr Oludayo Tade has advised federal government to revise her harsh policies to reduce its negative impacts on the livelihoods of Nigerians warning that consistent harsh policies may trigger increased corruption and crime.

The criminologist at the University of Ibadan noted that Nigeria has all the trappings of facing increasing crime and corruption as a result of the strains which many Nigerians are facing due to harsh policies of government and the backlashes of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to him, any society experiencing poverty and unemployment, and stifling economic reality is likely to have citizens who are pushed to the fringe to innovate survivalist strategies which may be crime and corrupt behaviours.

Speaking against the backdrop of increase in fuel price and electricity tariffs, Dr Tade noted that statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics already showed that Nigerians are living in precarious conditions with lower standards of living.

According to Dr Tade the spiral effects of hike in electricity and fuel on the majority of Nigerians may force many to adopt alternative routes to actualise their unmet needs.

The criminologist advised government to revise its harsh policies which may be counterproductive may contribute to insecurity in the land.

He advised government to make Nigerians believe in the Nigerian project by making live worth living for people in Nigeria in other not to force many to resort to self help.

“Already, unemployment rate is about 27.1%. Millions of people lost their jobs due to COVID-19 and are yet to recover. Many of those just returning to work can barely survive as dependants have increased on their meagre earnings. Poverty is increasing in the land and policy is not mitigating this growing population of people who lack and have unmet needs.

Nigerians are subsidising electricity by paying for Meter, NEPA poles, cables and Transformer and will be corruptly charged before they are connected. Fuel hike will affect transportation, cost of food and cost of production. It will not only make life more difficult for the common man but will increase crime and criminality. Thirty thousand minimum wage is less than eighty dollars ($80) in a month in a country where local rice sells around N24,000 and imported sells around N26,000 naira. It is becoming difficult to live in Nigeria and the consequences of bad policies are reflecting in the growth of disenchanted populace. Basic necessities of life barely exist in Nigeria. The 2019/2020 Nigerian living Standards survey released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that 82.9million (40.1%) Nigerians are poor. Disaggregating this data further unveils how poverty has burrowed into the space where most Nigerians domicile — the rural area. A larger proportion of Nigerians live in rural area while slightly above 40% live in urban centres. While the national poverty headcount rate is 40.1%, the rural has 52.1% as against urban’s 18.04% headcount rate.

Furthermore, the survey shows that there is a significant geographical inequality in poverty spread. More people are poor in the Northern part of Nigeria compared to the southern part. Of these, the northeastern part of the country returned more poverty indices. Adamawa (75.4%), Yobe (72.3%), Sokoto (87.7%), Taraba (87.7%), Zamfara (72.3%), and Jigawa (87.2%) all have percentages of poor people far above national average. The southern part of the country mostly returned percentages of poor people below the national average while the southwest recorded the lowest number of poor people.Lagos, the commercial nerve center of the country returned 4.5%, Ogun (9.3%), Ondo (12.5%), and Oyo (9.83%) with Ekiti State (28.4%) returning the highest figure of the poverty endemic state in the region. The widening gap of poverty and inequality in Nigeria explains why it may be a tall dream for the populous Black Country to meet the Sustainable development goals of eradicating unemployment, extreme poverty and hunger.

The privileged class holding the levers of power do not see the danger of building an army of unemployed, distressed and disconnected populace who will fight back on the system which has failed to cater for it. To turn the tide, Nigeria needs close the gap of inequality and actively engage youths in productive economy. Aside the role of the national government, State governments must localise development policy which captures the unmet needs of the poor.”

The Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ), Oyo State Council has congratulated Mr Mufutau Ojo on his appointment as the Special Assistant to the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

This is contained in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Mr Ademola Babalola and Secretary, Mr Sola Oladapo.

The statement made available to newsmen on Thursday in Ibadan, described the appointment as well deserved.

Ojo, a Deputy Editor-in-Chief with the agency, was until his new appointment the Manager of Ibadan Zonal Office.

The NUJ described Ojo as a thoroughbred professional, astute administrator and a leader who distinguished himself throughout his reign as the Zonal Manager of NAN Ibadan Zonal office.

“Everything you have done and accomplished have led to this point and you truly deserve it. You’ve always worn diligence, dedication and professionalism like a toga.

“You have worked so hard and created the necessary advantage to convince others of your potential and abilities.

“Your kindheartedness and managerial acumen have been a major topic since your appointment was made public,” it said.

It said further that “the union wholeheartedly identified with you because of your patriotic ideals, unbridled commitment to legacy and doggedness towards building the media industry.

“We are proud of you and as stakeholders in the Journalism sector, we are optimistic that you would give the required commitment to you boss towards repositioning the agency for greater heights,” the union said.

…as Aawe isolation centre reverts to PHC

The Oyo State COVID-19 Task Force, headed by Governor Seyi Makinde, has announced the cancellation of the 10 p.m. curfew imposed on the state in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Makinde, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, which contained details of the report of the Task Force meeting held on August 31, 2020, and presided over by the governor, indicated that the curfew has been abolished after series of reviews.

The Task Force, however, specifically warned operators of Night Clubs to desist from accommodating persons in closed areas within their premises, adding that research has confirmed that the virus spreads faster when people cluster in closed venues.

According to the statement, an advisory would be sent to Night Clubs Owners by the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) arm of the Task Force, which will warn operators not to allow guests into their enclosed areas.

The statement further indicated that the Task Force issued another warning to residents of the state to continue to follow the OWN YOUR ACTION initiative of the state’s COVID-19 Task Force, as, according to the Task Force, the state “is not completely out of the woods with regards to COVID-19.”

It explained that the decision by the Governor Makinde-led Task Force to abolish the curfew was premised on the need to reduce the burden on business owners in the state, whom, it said, has been affected by the curfew, especially since the COVID-19 situation has begun to improve in the state.

According to the Task Force, though it appeared that COVID-19 cases are coming down in the state, “the confidence interval could not be determined yet.”

It warned residents of the state not to jettison the guidelines on the prevention of the virus, including washing of hands, social distancing and use of nose masks.

The statement also informed that Governor Makinde has directed the EOC not to relent in data gathering and analysis in order to appropriately situate the context of the virus within the state.

The statement added that the governor has also approved the conversion of the Aawe Isolation Centre to a Level 3 Primary Health Care Centre (PHC), directing that the facility should be decontaminated and handed over to the Hospital Management Board.

Similarly, the statement confirmed that the Task Force has approved that except for the Infectious Disease Centre, Olodo, Ibadan, other isolation centres in the state could be converted to Level 3 PHC.

It, however, stated that whenever a spike in COVID-19 cases is noticed in the location where any of the facilities is situated, such a facility would be re-converted as an isolation centre or a part of it will be so utilized as an isolation centre.

The statement also indicated that the Task Force has directed the Oyo State Hospital Management Board to identify a Primary Health Care Centre around Olodo axis of Ibadan, which would be upgraded to take care of residents in that axis, as there are no designated government hospital facilities around the Iwo Road-Olodo axis.

While briefing the Task Force meeting, former Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital and Coordinator of the Oyo State Isolation Centres, Professor Temitope Alonge, maintained that upon the decline in the number of COVID-19 patients on admission at the isolation centres, the staff strength of the healthcare workers should be reduced to a tenth of the current size.

He added that the health care workers in the Oyo State service have been adequately trained to manage the reduced cases of infection, saying that health workers from the UCH would be put on the reserved list and called upon whenever the need arises.

In its briefing at the meeting, the EOC reported that it has, in collaboration with the Information Communication Centre of the state, developed a portal for the registration of NCDC-licensed private laboratories for the conduct of COVID-19 tests.

In all, the Task Force noted that a total of 15,700 COVID-19 tests have been conducted, with 3,118 confirmed cases and 37 fatalities.

The Special Adviser to the governor on Health, Dr Funmi Salami, also hinted that there has been a spike in the cases of stroke among the elderly in the state largely due to being confined to their various homes in order to avoid COVID-19 infections.

The Task Force, therefore, approved that advisory messages on how to avoid stroke will be rolled out through designated media outlets.
The statement further said that the state is already designing an advisory guideline on voluntary compliance with COVID-19 protocols, while the Commissioner for Education, Barr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye, reiterated that concerted efforts have been made to ensure that schools complied with COVID-19 safety protocols upon resumption.

The statement concluded that so far, the state has received donations in cash, agricultural goods and health equipment to the tune of N1.273 billion since the outbreak of COVID-19 in the state, while the governor⁷ appreciated everyone who supported the state in different ways during the pandemic.

It was with sheer hope and enthusiasm of being freed from the gruelling webs of unemployment via a meritorious recruitment process that over 65000 applicants came out in droves to write the Oyo Tescom CBT exam which took place within the weeks of August 2020.

The University of Ibadan distance learning center, Ajibode was filled to the brim and almost spilling over with crowd who took turns to write their tests. The job application was extended to all qualified residents of the state willing to seek employment as teachers in government owned secondary schools.

The CBT exercise was not meant to be a walk in the park for the 65 thousand applicants as the state government only advertised 7 thousand vacancies. It was a test for the savviest and brightest to select the most qualified hands that could be entrusted with nurturing the young minds in public secondary schools who have been at the receiving end of poor staffing and institutional rigidity in the education sector which the present government has vowed to reposition.

According to Pastor Akianade Alamu, the state Tescom Chairman, after the grilling exercise which was contracted to an Education Consultant, 6,369 candidates emerged with a score of 50 percent and above – which is the recommended pass mark by the Education Consulting firm who organised the tests.

However, the recommendation of the examiners was instantly deflated by Tescom owing to the claim that the vacancies for some subjects might not be met if their cut-off marks should be placed on the 50 percent benchmark. Therefore, applicants with lower marks would be considered for the next phase of the recruitment exercise. While this might be said to be fair; it leaves suspicions on the integrity of the whole process which the CBT exam sought to protect. The cut-off marks, as touted by feelers in the scheme of things, is to be drastically lowered to accommodate the interests of influence peddlers, political hatchet men and highly placed sabbotouers who believe in unlawfully biting from all the goodies of governance without recourse to merit or due process.

The last straw that broke the camel’s back was the statement made by the Tescom boss on Wednesday during a radio program that it is the staff of the Ministries of Education, Establishment; and Tescom that would interview the selected candidates in what is expected to be the final phase of the recruitment exercise. This has further indictated that no fairness can come out of such a dodgy process.

A great percentage of the applicants are sons and daughters of the State civil servants. How do we expect fairness by making someone a judge in his own case? Not only would the staff of the government agencies deliberately compromise the process, they would also bow to scathing pressures from influence peddlers across the state. Employees will therefore not emerge on the alter of merit but familial and social ties with civil servants of the state – and also, based on their attendance at political ward meetings, and closeness to societal bigwigs. This has always been the sordid path that recruitment process is often charted in the country.

One wonders what will be the fate of our wards in public schools if recruitments of teachers should be heavily politicised in such a crafty manner that gives privileges to unqualified individuals to man the classrooms. One also wonders what will be of the qualified applicants who would be stripped off the opportunities to be gainfully employed in what is essentially looking like a pyramid scheme being orchestrated by a government that readily claims to be a populist. What manner of ‘audio’ populism is this?

It will be deceitful, uncharitable and a crass show of irrepressible talent for falsehood if the Makinde-led government which, hitherto, has been revered as a breath of fresh air plans to subvert the recruitment process by merely deploying CBT exercise as a decoy to divert the attention of the public from this disreputable charade.

Why can’t the government allow a consulting firm be in charge of the interview phase and select the highest performers through a well coordinated process where candidates would be able to see their interview scores as obtainable during the CBT? Why can’t we have a fair recruitment process for once in this country? Would Engr. Seyi Makinde look on and allow the system to continue to rot under his watch? Is the Governor also an accomplice in this charade? These are fundamental questions that should be answered.

An applicant that scored 70 per cent in the CBT earlier conducted might be dropped for another one with as little as 40 percent or below, and if asked, the Tescom boss would claim the former must have failed the interview. Who would then question his assertion?

The recently concluded Oyo state Hospital Management recruitment is a pointer to the clandestine plot that might be played out by some of officials. Evidence abounds of many applicants who scored above 80 per cent in the CBT exercise conducted in March and were overlooked during the interview phase. It is on record that job slots were openly shared among political cronies in the Hospital board recruitment.

The only way a dose of legality can be re-injected into the recruitment exercise of Tescom is by taking it from the reach of civil servants in various ministries and agencies of the state to a professional consulting firm whose mandate would be to fish for the best brains from the pool of applicants without fear or favor. This is the practice that is obtainable in the corporate world which nurtured and moulded the Governor to a man he is today.

Failure of Oyo state government to delegate the interview phase of the recruitment to the right hands would be distasteful; and the Makinde-led government would always be remembered as another administration which succeeded in sustaining the institutional ruins of the state.

The chairman of the Lagos state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) -Alex Bamgbola, has prophesied that ex minister of aviation – Femi Fani-Kayode, will become Nigeria’s president.

Bamgbola made the proclamation while praying for Fani-Kayode during the celebration of Isaac Idahosa, general overseer of God First Ministry, 31st year in the ministry.

In a video captured by Legit, Bamgbola said: “If you do not compromise yourself, God said I should tell you, you will one day rule this nation.”

Speaking after the church service, Fani-Kayode condemned the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on August 7.

The law stipulates that religious bodies and charity organisations will be regulated by the registrar-general of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and a minister
But Fani-Kayode said any law that seeks to regulate the affairs of the church is evil.

“My position is simple. You cannot regulate the affairs of the church. The church of years has stood for many years; hundreds of thousands of years ever since it was established,” Fani-Kayode said.

And great powers have come and gone that tried to destroy it; it’s never worked and it can never work. And any law that seeks to regulate the affairs of churches is absolutely evil and I consider that section of that act to be evil.
