Children’s Day: Senator Alli Celebrates Children, Commends Parents’ Efforts

Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South) has extended heartfelt felicitation to children across the nation in celebration of Children’s day, urging them to uphold virtues of good behaviour and discipline.

This is contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Akeem Abas, and made available to newsmen on Sunday in Ibadan.

Alli expressed his best wishes to them, emphasising the importance of childhood and the role of children in the future of the nation.

“Let’s embrace their dreams; so pure and bold, with love and kindness, let their dreams unfold. Nurture their talents and aid them to forge their paths. Children are our hope, our future, we say,” he said.

The lawmaker urged children to remain obedient and respectful, stressing the fundamental role these virtues play in forming their personalities and shaping a brighter future for themselves and the country.

He stressed that obedience forms the bedrock of character development, describing it as essential for personal and societal progress.

Alli acknowledged the efforts of parents and guardians, praising their dedication as well as commitment to raising responsible citizens.

The lawmaker noted that the guidance provided by adults is crucial during the formative years of a child’s life, encouraging parents to continue instilling good values and morals in their children.

He expressed commitment to supporting policies and initiatives that promote the societal well-being as well as development of children.

Alli reiterated the importance of creating a safe and conducive environment for all children across the country to thrive.

The lawmaker emphasised that government as well as society must work together to ensure every child has access to education, healthcare, and opportunities for growth.

Senator Alli’s message for Children’s day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to nurture and protect the younger generation.

“Happy Children’s Day, where innocence reigns, where every child’s happiness truly sustains. Let’s cherish their laughter, hold them tight, for they bring us joy and pure delight,” he said.

He prayed that God Almighty would continue to bless parents in nurturing the younger generation and protect the children, who represent the future of the nation.

The immediate past House of Reps Member in Ogo-Oluwa Surulere Federal Constituency, Hon. Segun Dokun Odebunmi has urged Nigerians to keep faith with president Tinubu’s led Federal Government because better days lies ahead.

Hon. Odebunmi who also called for more patience with the government said though things are hard now but policies of the federal government will soon be yielding positive development and better transformation.

Bunvic as he is foundly called said this while distributing about 1000 bags of 25kg rice palliatives to his constituents at the weekend in Iresaadu, surulere local government area of Oyo state and promised to do more

Odebunmi who served as chairman House of Reps Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Value said “President Tinubu meant well for Nigerians and i am optimistic that things will work out fine and take shape, people expect Magic and Miracle,that cannot happened in governance, let us keep faith with president Tinubu’s adminstration, i am confident that things will take shape.”

On the issue of fuel subsidy removal the okanlomo of Ogbomosoland said “Nigerians are not the one enjoying the subsidy when we were playing it because the volume of refined fuel that is being imported into the country is far below the amount of fuel the government is paying subsidy for, we are only subsidizing fuel for our neighbouring countries and some individuals who are heavily millking the nation resources through Subsidy claims, but with the determination of the federal government to fix the refineries, the price of fuel will come down and other things will follow suit, we will even be exporting petrol to other countries.”

“Explaining why he facilitated the palliatives, the All Progressives Congress Chieftain said, ” I am determined to always ensure that my constituents are not left out from enjoying the dividends of Democracy, FG has rolled out a lot of palliatives which did not get to the people that actually needed it, i decided to link up with our people in government and facilitate this for my people”

Senator Alli mourns Pa Banjo, describes his death as huge loss to Nigeria, academic community

Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South) has expressed sorrow over the passing of Prof. Ayo Banjo, an Emeritus Professor of English Language and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI).

This is contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Akeem Abas, and made available to newsmen on Saturday in Ibadan.

The late Banjo, who also served as pro-chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo died in the early hours of Friday at age 90.

Senator Alli acknowledged the significant contributions of the late Banjo to academia and the nation.

The lawmaker said that the late Banjo’s tenure as UI Vice-Chancellor was marked by remarkable leadership and dedication to educational excellence.

He said that the deceased, who was the Vice-Chancellor of UI during his time as a student, later became his good neighbour always offering useful advices to the residents most especially the younger ones.

Alli described the late Banjo as a lover of youths who was always deeply interested in the development, progress, and advancement of the upcoming generation.

The lawmaker described Banjo’s death as a great loss to the academic community and the nation, acknowledging his enduring legacy in fostering educational growth and nurturing young minds.

He commiserated with the nation’s academic community and the’ family, praying that God grant his soul eternal rest.

Alli also prayed that Almighty God grant his family, the academic community and the nation fortitude to bear the huge loss.

Embattled Ibadan Chief, Olawale Oladoja in court for parading himself as Mogaji

The deposed family head (Mogaji) of Akinsola family, Olawale Oladoja on Friday arraigned in court for parading himself as Mogaji of the family following his removal by the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun and the Olubadan-in-council.

Oladoja was arraigned before Magistrate O.O. Ogunkanmi of the Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Iyaganku, Ibadan on three count charge bordering on unlawfully parading himself as Mogaji of Akinsola family, unlawfully granting false press conference that desecrated office of Olubadan and causing bridge of peace that desecrated exalted office of the Olubadan.

The charge, no Mi/696c/c/2024 reads: “That you OLAWALE OLADOIA ‘M’, on or about the 2nd day of March, 2024, at Oopo Labiran area, Ibadan, in the Ibadan Magisterial district did unlawfally parade yourself as the Mogaji of Akinsola family after you were removed by His imperial Majesty, the late Olubadan of Ibadanland late Oba Moshood Olalekan Balogun and Olubadan-in Council by wearing beads as symbol of your office
and thereby committed an offence Contrary to and punishable under Section 26(5)(o)(b) of the Chiefs law, Cap 28, Vol. I, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.

COUNT II: That you OLAWALE OLADOJA ‘M, on the same date, time and
place in the aforementioned Magisterial district did unlawfully grant a false press
conference that desecrated the exalted office of the Olubadan of Ibadan land
conderning his action for conferring title on a notable Ibadan son which is capable of causing fear and alarm to the public and thereby committed an offence Contrary to and punishable under Section 59 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.

COUNT III:- That you OLAWALE OLADOJA ‘M, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned Magisterial district did Conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of the pecce by granting a false press conference that desecrated the exalted office of the Olubadan of Ibadan land condemning his action for conferring title on a notable Ibadan son which is capable of causing fear and alarm to the public and thereby committed an offence Contrary to and punishable under Section 249(d) of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol, II, Laws of Oyo
State of Nigeria, 2000.

The suspect however pleaded not guilty of all the charges against him.

Ogunkanmi however granted Oladoja bail of N100,000 with one surety.

She therefore adjourned the case till 15th July 2024 for hearing.

Recall that Oladoja was suspended by late Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun over his alleged involvement in various abnormalities within Ibadan and it’s environs.

Olubadan also directed the Akinsola family to nominate another member of the family, who they found worthy of the position to replace Oladoja.

Desicion to suspend Oladoja was as a result of the fall-out of an emergency meeting of the Olubadan Advisory Council presided over by His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lekan Balogun at his Alarere Palace and which had in attendance representatives of the Association of Mogajis of Ibadanland led by its President-General, Chief Asimiyu Adepoju Ariori and the Assistant Secretary-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Suleiman Iyanda Raufu, who stood in for Chief Barr. Niyi Ajewole, the President-General of the Council.

Olubadan the big axe fell on Oladoja on account of his recent media outbursts considered disrespectful to the Olubadan stool and by extension the traditional institution of Ibadanland.

The media reports credited to the deposed Mogaji, according to the Council were described as divisive, disparaging and insulting and unbecoming of a supposed leader, who is expected to be urbane and cautious in deeds and actions, stressing that the conduct of Oladoja since his short suspension about six months ago was not suggestive of any sense of remorse.

It would be recalled that the same Olubadan Advisory Council ordered the suspension of Oladoja over inhuman execution of supposed court judgment on a land matter and for which he threw out some residents of Akinsola village in Akinyele Local Government area of the state, a conduct then described as untoward and a breach of the peace.

At Saturdayā€™s meeting, the Council recalled that the suspension placed on him then did not last long because of his perceived genuine remorse and principally, because of His Imperial Majestyā€™s peaceful disposition, adding, ā€œthe recent outbursts by the same person have shown him as somebody without no iota of respect for constituted authority and any failure to bring upon him the full weight of the Councilā€™s power would amount to condoning of indisciplineā€.

To drive home the point, the Akinsola Family which produced him in the first instance was subsequently asked to present another person to replace him as the Mogaji of the family if they are still interested in having a substantive Mogaji. The family are already working on their new candidate but he is not coronated, so where is the contempt of the court in the whole process ?

The deposed Mogaji was invited to the meeting but failed to show up on an excuse that his mother died about 24 hours to the meeting, an alibi that failed to convince the Council. Members, who spoke on his excuse described it as a gimmick to evade interrogation on the allegations against him and said they could not be swayed by such antics

Oyo NAWOJ Gets Caretaker Committee Ahead of June Election

The Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), an affiliate of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has been placed under a Caretaker Committee ahead of its June election.

This decision was announced in a statement issued by the NAWOJ National Secretary, Wasilah Ladan, on Thursday, May 22, 2024.

The statement dissolved the Jadesola Ajibola-led NAWOJ leadership in Oyo State and appointed a three-member caretaker committee to manage the chapter’s affairs.

The committee members are Omolara Ayoade (FRCN Chapel), Kehinde Igbari (NTA Chapel) and Adenike Kaffi (Correspondents’ Chapel).

According to the statement, the dissolution was necessary due to the following reasons: “The Chairperson, Jadesola Ajibola, has been posted out of the state and has exceeded the six-month grace period provided in the NUJ constitution.

“Most executive offices in the chapter are vacant due to either the non-qualification of elected officers under the new NUJ constitution or the demise of officers.

“The deletion of some chapels from the Union has also led to vacant offices among ALGIO members in the executive.”

The caretaker committee will preside over the chapter’s affairs and conduct elections into the offices of NAWOJ Oyo Chapter within one month of inauguration.

Oyo Federal Lawmaker, ‘Odidiomo’ Congratulates Outgoing LG Chairmen, Charges Incomings To Be Transparent

Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide (Odidiomo), member representing Ibadan North-west/Ibadan South-west Federal Constituency of Oyo state at the House of Representatives who is also the Chairman, House Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, has commended outgoing Local Government Chairmen for their diligence and apt response to duties, while charging newly elected ones to serve with integrity, transparency and accountability.

In a statement by Tolu Mustapha, Special Adviser, Media and Public Affairs to Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide, the two term lawmaker congratulated the outgoing chairmen for their selfless service and commitment to the development of their respective Local Governments.

“Your dedication and hard work have laid a solid foundation for the incoming chairmen to build upon.

“I commend you for your service and wish you well in your future endeavors.”

Olajide also congratulated the newly elected chairmen, urging them to prioritize service delivery and put the people first.

Seyi Makinde, are expected to hit the ground running, tackling pressing issues such as infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and security.

Hon. Olajide also commended Governor Makinde for the smooth transition process devoid of acrimony or bitterness, particularly the wisdom and exceptional leadership provided by the Governor in resolving all pre and post-election fallout before the swearing-in of the new chairmen.

He urged the Governor not to relent in his effort at offering the right leadership and support to the incoming chairmen, who will be responsible for implementing the state government’s policies and programmes at the Local Government level.

Integrate Industrial Social Work In Your Curricular – UI Don Tells UniversitiesĀ

A professor of Industrial Social Work at the department of Social Work, University of Ibadan, Professor Emmanuel Majekodunmi Ajala has called on universities offering social work courses to integrate industrial social work in their curricular.

The don noted that this is necessary so as to allow industrial social work professionals upgrade their educational programme and professional skills for practice in a highly dynamic and changing business environment.

Ajala made these declarations on Wednesday while delivering his valedictory lecture titled “I will continue where you have stopped: The Interplay between human resources managers and social workers in the workplace”.

The event was attended by the VIce Chancellor of the university, Professor Kayode Adebowale who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Peter Olapegba, Dean of Faculty of Education, Professor Olufemi Adegbesan, Head of Department of Social Work, Dr. Titilola Adebowale and immediate past Secretary to Osun state government, Prince Wole Oyebamiji and his wife.

Other personalities at the event are Professor G.O. Mojoyinola, Professor Lydia Yemisi Olaleye, Professor James Ayangunna, Professor Emeka Okafor, Professor Kabiru Salami, Dr. Isaiah Mobolaji Ojedokun, Dr. Abdulateef Adeoti, Dr. Abimbola Afolabi and Dr. Helen Fatoye among others.

Ajala while addressing the gathering, advised universities offering social work courses in the country to integrate industrial social work in their curricular.

He also suggested that there should be more awareness on the role of industrial social workers in the society.

The valedictory lecturer while speaking further, maintained that social work is still emerging profession in the country.

He added that the signing of the Nigerian Council for Social Work [Establishment] Act 2022 into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari will make the practice of social work align with worldwide standard.

“Although social work is still emerging in Nigeria, it has demonstrated consistent expansion due to the increasing number of professionals undergoing training. In Nigeria, certain higher educational institutions have already incorporated social work as a component of their curriculum, offering courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels.

“There is need for proper integration of industrial social work in the curriculum of social work practice in Nigeria and at the various academic social work curricula in Nigerian universities. This is based on the fact that industrial social work professionals need to upgrade their educational programme and professional skills for practice in a highly dynamic and changing business environment. There is need for synergy between industrial social worker and human resources personnel.

“The National Assembly, on June 28, 2022, concurrently passed the bill establishing the National Council for Social Work (Establishment Bill 2022) into law which President Buhari signed on December 6, 2022. The bill now is an Act (No 25, 2022). The signing of the bill into law will make the practice of social work in the country align with worldwide standards.

“The Nigerian Council for Social Work (NCSW) and its board were established by the federal government with the aim of ensuring rigorous adherence to operational standards that regulate the practice of social work in Nigeria. The governing body is legally obligated to ensure rigorous adherence to all legislations that govern the practice of social work in Nigeria. Additionally, they would serve as a central hub for the development of draft policies and initiatives pertaining to the enhancement of the social service workforce in Nigeria, with the aim of promoting uniformity and standardisation.

“Board members are also expected to oversee all aspects of social work education and practice in Nigeria. Because social work as a profession is still in the developmental stage in Nigeria, it has not got many specialised areas. Among the few specialised areas, industrial social work has had the least awareness”.

Ibadan Obas, Mogajis, Baales, Other Stakeholders Hail IGP Wife’s Visit To Olubadan Designate

The Chiefs in Ibadanland, Mogajis, Baales, and the Jagun Olubadan of Ibadanland, have commended the wife of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mrs. Elizabeth Egbetokun for her visit to the Olubadan designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

They said the visit was significant because it was the first delegation from the Federal Government to the Olubadan designate.

Recall that the IGP wife who is also the President, Police Officersā€™ Wives Association (POWA) in company of wives of other Police top hierarchy on Tuesday 21st May, 2024 paid courtesy visit to the Olubadan designate at his Alalubosa Ibadan GRA residence.

Ibadan Chiefs who received the Mrs. Egbetokun at the residents of the Olubadan designate before ushering her in to meet Oba Olakulehin and some notable members of Olubadan in council include the Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Eddy Oyewole; Osi Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Lateef Adebimpe, Ashipa Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Kola Adegbola, and the President of Mogajis in Ibadanland, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori, President of the Baales, Baale F.D Ige among others.

A statement jointly signed by the President of Ibadan Mogajis, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori and Coordinator, Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative (ICPI), Mogaji Nurudeen Akinade stated that the visit of delegation of women to Olakulehin was an harbinger of peace and progress in Ibadanland.

Engr. Dotun Sanusi who was represented by Mogaji Nurudeen Akinade lauded Mrs. Egbetokun, saying effort of women towards bringing peace and development to the society can not be overemphasized.

While welcoming the delegation on behalf of the Olubadan-designate, the Osi Balogun of Ibadanland, HRM Oba Lateef Adebimpe thanked Police Officers Wives Association for the visit and for their support to the course of women emancipation in the country.

He vowed to give priority to genda equality and respect for women irrespective of their political, tribe or religious status.

Earlier, Wife of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Mrs. Elizabeth Egbetokun called for stakeholders collaboration to empower Young Women in Agriculture, to further solve the issue of food insecurity in the Country.

Legacy Stars of Ibadan To Celebrate 20th Anniversary with Weeklong Festivities

The Legacy Stars of Ibadan (LSI), an affiliate of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), has decided marking its 20th anniversary with a series of events aimed at celebrating its contributions to the community and its continued commitment to the development of Ibadan.

Founded in 2004, LSI has grown into a pivotal organization within the CCII, promoting cultural, social and educational initiatives.

The weeklong celebration kicked off on Saturday, May 18, 2024, with a press briefing held at the Ibadan House, Oke Aremo. Mogaji Saheed Oyewale Abiola, President of LSI and Barrister Oladepo Kazeem the organization’s secretary disclosed this while addressing members of the press.

“Good afternoon, gentlemen of the press. We are thrilled to share the exciting activities planned for our 20th anniversary.

“Our goal is to celebrate our past achievements and look forward to future contributions to the Ibadan community.”

Abiola highlighted several key achievements of LSI, saying, “Over the past 20 years, we have successfully organized numerous educational programs, outreach initiatives, and cultural events that have significantly impacted our community. Many of our proudest moments include fighting for the appointment of an Ibadan indigene as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, among others.”

Southwest NUJ Leaders Laud Gov Makinde for Holding NEC Meeting in June

Leaders of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) from across the six States of the Southwest Nigeria on Friday rise from its zonal meeting in Ibadan, applauding the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde for giving approval to host the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Union in Ibadan next month (June).

The commendation was part of the communique arrived at, after extensive deliberations on issues affecting NUJ and the Southwest at large.

the Zonal leadership meeting was presided over by the Vice President, Princess Ronke Afebioye-Samo.

They urged other State Governors in the zone to emulate wonderful disposition of Governor Makinde to the media profession, well-being of journalists and the NUJ in general.

The hosting Chairman, Ademola Babalola had appraised the leaders of Governor Makindeā€™s countless supports to the Union over the years, with emphasis on the recent approval to host the NEC in Ibadan.

The Ondo State NUJ Council chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite had equally commended Ademola Babalola leadership for always changing the face of the Unionā€™s secretariat because ā€œevery time we are in Ibadan, itā€™s always one new project or the other. Mr Chairman, Ademola Babalola deserve to be appreciated for his many giant strides as a leader with focus and determination to achieve laudable things for our Unionā€.

NUJ Lauds Power Minister, Bayo Adelabu for Transparent Distribution of FGā€™s Rice Palliatives

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has praised the Minister of Power, Chief Bayo Adelabu for utilizing the media to reach residents through the distribution of 10,000 bags of rice as palliatives from the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government.Ā 

 

This gesture, according to Adelabu aims to cushion the impact of the economy on the suffering masses.

 

In a statement signed by the Chairman, Ademola Babalola, and made available to reporters by the Secretary, Sola Oladapo, the NUJ appreciated the minister for the transparent manner in which he handled the distribution to various religious groups, organizations, and others in the State.

 

Notably, over 45 media houses were provided with atleast 50 bags of 25kg rice for their staffers and members of the public to make phone calls on radio programs to receive the gesture.

 

Adelabu said this initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting the masses during these challenging economic times.

 

The NUJ also commended President Tinubu for this gesture to Nigerian masses, acknowledging the efforts of the Federal Government to alleviate the suffering of citizens.

 

However, the Union urged the government to step up its economic recovery plan for the masses to provide a sigh of relief in the face of excruciating poverty and rising inflation. The NUJ emphasized the need for sustainable solutions to address the economic challenges facing the country.

 

Furthermore, the NUJ commended the Power Minister for the recent improvement in power supply, acknowledging the progress made in addressing the nation’s energy challenges.

 

The Union also tasked the minister to ensure that all Nigerians have access to electricity supply, emphasizing the importance of reliable power supply in driving economic growth and development.

 

This commendation and call to action by the NUJ highlights the critical role of the media in promoting transparency and accountability in governance, as well as the need for sustained efforts to address the economic challenges facing the nation.

Improving ICU Services In Nigeria: A Critical Need for Healthcare Advancement | Dr. Charles Oluwarotimi Poluyi and Dr. Oluwasegun Mathew Akinti

Intensive care is a specialized medical care for people who have life-threatening illnesses. This care usually occurs in a specialized location in a hospital called the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Examples of cases that require ICU include patients with serious infections affecting a single or several organ systems of the body, people who find it difficult to breathe and require mechanical ventilation, people who are involved in accidents with serious injuries, and hypertensive emergencies.

Professionals critical to the ICU’s functioning include physicians known as
Intensivists, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, and speech-language therapists. Nigeria currently has over 30 ICUs, most located in teaching hospitals. Although South-Western Nigeria, particularly Lagos, has made giant strides in improving ICU care, there remains a significant imbalance between the available workforce, the number of ICU beds per 100,000 residents, equipment and facilities, and funding. The mortality rates from ICU admissions are remarkably high. In a retrospective research study in 2022 by Eya et al. on Admission and Mortality Patterns in Intensive Care Delivery at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, the mortality rate during the study period was 34.1 percent. Similarly, in a 5-year retrospective research study at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital by Poluyi et al. in 2016, the mortality rate was 61.4 percent.

These figures highlight Nigeria’s urgent need for improved ICU facilities and healthcare policies.

A recent research study of ICUs in Sub-Saharan Africa by Osinaike et al. showed that there was a total of 385 ICU beds in Nigeria as of 2019, roughly translating to a ratio of about 0.19 beds per 100,000 population. Meanwhile, Ghana has about 0.5 ICU beds per 100,000 people. Ethiopia has about 0.3 per 100,000 population. South Africa has 8.9 beds per 100,000 population and appears to lead the pack in Africa. On the other hand, according to statista.com, the United States of America (USA) has 34.7 ICU beds per 100,000 population, while Germany, in Europe, has 29.2 beds per 100,000 population. This demonstrates the need for Nigeria, a country with a population of over 200 million people, to deploy funding and resources for emergency preparedness, e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic, and reduce mortality from life-threatening illnesses at the ICU.

It is a pressing reality that Nigeria is grappling with a severe shortage of trained ICU physicians.

The few that are available are predominantly concentrated in urban centers. This is due primarily to the brain drain of medical professionals to Western countries, where they are better appreciated and rewarded. It is high time a state of emergency was declared in the health sector and policies were swiftly implemented to ensure that more physicians are trained and retained in the country.

The exodus of physicians can be significantly reduced if they are adequately remunerated relative to their colleagues in other parts of the world. According to the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, 6 out of 10 physicians in Nigeria plan to emigrate to a foreign country.
Moreover, between 2016 and 2018, 9000 physicians emigrated to the UK, Canada, and the United States. The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, disclosed that about 16,000 doctors left the country in the last five years. Nigeria has about 55,000 licensed doctors left to serve a population of over 200 million. How can we improve ICU care if most doctors are fleeing the country? Urgent intervention is not just a necessity but a moral imperative. The COVID-19 pandemic has starkly underscored the need for pandemic preparedness to manage life-threatening presentations.
The ICU requires both basic and advanced hemodynamic monitoring equipment. During the recent COVID-19 pandemic, there was a paucity of mechanical ventilators worldwide, and many patients died even in developed countries because their resources were overwhelmed by the relatively high morbidity of respiratory illnesses. It was indeed a miracle that the COVID-19 pandemic largely evaded Africa. It is best left to our imagination the level of widespread panic and perhaps ‘dead bodies on the street’ of Nigeria, as warned by Melinda Gates. In addition, Thisday newspaper recently reported that Nigeria spends between 1.5 billion and 2 million annually on medical tourism. Again, it is pertinent to suggest here that patriotic government officials should instead find ways of building world-class facilities in Nigeria, including ICUs, and importing foreign physicians to work in these facilities along with Nigerian physicians so that in the long run, there will be a geometric improvement in the standard of healthcare offered to the average Nigerian resident.

In April 2001, the African Union resolved to dedicate at least 15 percent of its annual budget to the healthcare sector. While Nigeria is still at well less than 10 percent, South Africa has already met its agreed proportion of the budget allocated to health. The new National Health Insurance Act (NHIA) was signed into law in 2022. It replaced the failed National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) of 1999. One can only hope that the government would ensure adequate funding for NHIA so that the average citizen can access health services.

The potential of improved ICU care is not just about increasing the life expectancy of Nigerians from 52.68 years (2021) to at least greater than 70 years. It holds the promise of economic growth and a boost in national productivity. With improved healthcare, people will no longer have to die needlessly, and they will be alive to contribute their own quota to the economy. This is a vision of a healthier, more prosperous Nigeria that is within our reach, and it’s a vision that can inspire us all to work towards a better future.

I firmly believe that Nigeria has the potential to compete favorably with the rest of the world, particularly South Africa, Europe, and North America, in terms of healthcare. However, this can only be realized if the Nigerian government steps up, demonstrates patriotism and dedication, and action are crucial in this journey towards a healthier Nigeria, and it’s a responsibility that we all share.

Repositioning Agenda Is Deliberate, Yielding Desired Results – Senator Yunus Akintunde

In separate engagements and various meetings with Stakeholders within the All Progressives Congress, Senator Yunus Akintunde the Distinguished Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District at the Senate has assured that the efforts of the leadership towards repositioning the party in Oyo State are deliberately being implemented and will continue to yield desired results.

“No doubt we are not unaware of the prevailing circumstances affecting the fortunes of our Party APC in Oyo State despite the fantastic performance at the presidential election where we emerged victorious winning the three Senatorial seats and majority of the House of Representatives slots.

“Those issues will be resolved as the leadership of the party is constantly taking necessary steps to ensure that unity and cooperation beyond individual interests becomes paramount in our engagements and initiatives.

“It has become very glaring to everyone within the party, especially among the gladiators that individual ambition must no longer derail our overall objectives and efforts to regain control of governance in Oyo State.

“Any attempt by any individual irrespective of status to personalize issues for self-aggrandizement will no longer be tolerated and will be met with resistance by the resolution of the leadership of the party to ensure discipline within the Party henceforth.

“The mandate from our national leadership is very clear and that is to deploy all efforts and resources towards repositioning the APC in Oyo State towards regaining control of governance at all levels in 2027 and I strongly believe that we can achieve that mandate.

“I can assure unequivocally that very soon, the various strategic management efforts and synergetic partnership arrangement within the various stakeholders will begin to have tremendous effects on the repositioning agenda of our Party.

“Managing our time and resources as great minds towards achieving our goals and objectives can no longer be compromised on the pedestrian tendencies of the idiosyncrasies of a few recalcitrant and myopic individuals”. Those days are gone forever in APC Oyo State” he added.

“Although the results of the last local government elections remain controversial and the party will take necessary steps in due course in that regard, our participation in the election was deliberate and we are very satisfied with the response of our members and the electorates who if the elections were to be free and fair on a level playing grounds showed clearly our capacity to win convincingly overwhelmingly during the local government elections.

“In days ahead, our people in Oyo State will begin to see our Party taking over the political landscape of Oyo State and once again, we shall take on the path of progressive development and growth taking the lead as the Pacesetter State indeed.

“This will require a collaborative effort and approach by all stakeholders within the Party as we have now all appreciate the reality of the dynamics and peculiarities of Oyo State politics.” And we shall be very fair, just and transparent in our strategic repositioning agenda.

“We have resolved to ensure that no effort is spared in our determination and commitment towards achieving the goals of reclaiming our lost mandates at the State levels. This our quest is simply hinged on ensuring effective and efficient governance in the interest of all of us indigenes of Oyo State,” he concluded.

At the various meetings, the responses of the stakeholders indicated the readiness of everyone to put aside personal interests and expectations while the overall objectives of the party will henceforth be paramount however with a caution on the leadership to ensure fairness, integrity, openness, and equity while implementing the strategies of the repositioning agenda as emphasized by Senator Yunus Akintunde on behalf of the leadership of the Party.

Oyo NURTW Celebrates Judiciary Victory of Tajudeen Baruwa, Admonishes Members Nationwide to Support Him

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Oyo State Council rejoices with the President, Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, on the affirmation of his election as the President of NURTW Nigeria by the National Industrial Court in suit No. NICN/ABJ/263/2023.

 

The landmark judgment, delivered recently by Hon. Justice O.O. Oyewumi, proclaims Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa as the duly elected and authentic President of our great union (NURTW) nationwide for a second term of office.

 

In a press statement signed by the Chairman, Alhaji Abideen Olajide (Ejiogbe) and Secretary, Comrade (Otunba) Lekan Aleshinloye, the latest judiciary victory is described as a landmark victory for the rule of law and a testament to the leadership of our great Union’s strong belief in the Nigerian Judiciary system.

 

The affirmation of Alh. Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa’s victory has laid to rest all doubts about who the legitimate leader of NURTW is, and the Oyo State Council hereby declares its alignment with the Baruwa-led administration for a coordinated movement of the Union.

 

Both Abideen Ejiogbe and Lekan Alesinloye congratulate the National President, Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, as the duly elected and authentic President of the great Union (NURTW).
