The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan has warned Nigerians to take issues relating to their wellbeing with utmost caution as cardiac arrest threatens more lives in the country.
The development, experts argued was not unconnected with widespread poverty in the land.
The Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, Professor Temitope Alonge who made the warning at a symposium organised by Association of Radiologists in Nigeria (ARIN), said Nigerians need to pay more attention to their health status.
The event tagged “burden cardiovascular diseases and cardiac imaging” was part of events marking the international day of radiology.
Alonge said the theme of the lecture was timely because of the trending diseases in the country.
An expert in radiology, Dr. Adewole Adebiyi who spoke on the theme: “Burden of cardiovascular diseases in Nigeria”, said over 17million people die globally as a result of the new trending diseases.
Adebiyi warned that lack of exercise, abdominal obesity, smoking and poor health management system are responsible for the increase in numbers of the victim across the world.
He explained that cardiovascular is a group of disorder of the heart and blood vessels in the body.
According to Adebiyi: “cardiovascular diseases are group of disorder of the heart and blood vessels. Cardiovascular diseases killed 17.5million people globally and this has to be addressed.
“Economic burden is one of the challenges facing us in this part of the world while lack of exercise, abdominal obesity and smoking are responsible for the diseases,” he added.
Also speaking, Dr. Akinyemi Aje who spoke on the theme “cardiac imaging-echocardiography and coronary angiography” reiterated the commitment of the UCH in providing accurate examination.
